Down de road – Kadooment 2013

Drum roll please (my mom used to say that before big announcements) the post has finally come to expose another brilliant day of Kadooment!

Last year, I experienced my first Cropover here in Barbados and as usual I’ll give you the link to that adventure. To see details of the controlled chaos and more photos from the collage below, click here.

For this post, I’m going to teach a small lesson based off of my experiences to date.

First and foremost, it’s always more entertaining to get ready with a group. Everyone can use a little help from their friends! Meet Ethan, a kind hearted little man that was not only eager to apply my jewels, but did’t hesitate to dish out the compliments to me and his beautiful mother. “You are pretty girls… I come with you?” Its no surprise he’s such a gentle character coming from his parents Aldo and Jane, who are equally welcoming and full of warm energy.

20130813-092225.jpg

Ready, set, oh shoots… we’re late! Lesson number two, here in Barbados, “time” is just a general suggestion of when one may or may not think about arriving. All this means for us, is that instead of starting at a snails pace like the others, we get a tiny workout by actually walking to catch up with everyone.

20130813-092247.jpg

Side note: You’ll never be the only one running late. In fact, you have a better chance of being the only one there early!

Once the bands (a designated group in which you are representing) have gotten into order, we cross the big stage to officially kick off the 7 mile parade of dancing, chipping, whining and… are you ready for it? Wuk’n up!

Definitions:
Chipping – a dance step that is flat footed, knee bent and moving forward, almost as if to “chip” away the street.
Whining – a movement in which people attach themselves to one another by their ‘middle section’ and pulse, sway and thrust to the rhythm in every conceivable manner.
Wuk’n up – to gyrate the waistline upon another persons waistline, specifically to soca and/or calypso music.

A few photos from the crowds perspective followed by our view of the spectators, leads me to the next unspoken rule: just because you’re not in costume doesn’t mean you’re not allowed to get involved!

You might be wondering, why is everyone holding those cups and where did we get the liquid to fill them? Reminding you of the brilliant Barbadian way of keeping the adults fully hydrated (enter questionable sarcastic tone) by having mobile bars that travel with the parade. Just walk along next to it and request your next drink. Looking down with a smile, they’re at your service!

20130815-071342.jpg

All righty, the next portion of todays lesson requires an increased rating to PG-13 due to the dancing techniques and adult beverages now taking affect. Welcome to the world of open minded, bent knee, fun loving people “jus doin deir ting”!

Moving on to our next lesson, staying cool. If you care about your makeup looking perfect utill the end (you probably shouldn’t have come) anyhow, stay to the left! Although rain here during Cropover isn’t rare, it’s always guaranteed that you’ll have a refreshing source of water to drench you down during the walk.

Like some festivals I’ve experienced, there’s an over all vibe of “only doing it once, so go big” or “I’m never going to see any of these people again”! Not here. That alone is one of my favorite things of Kadooment, the loyal participants both local and traveling that return to share this unique holiday!

Lets have some fun and finish up this assignment with a few past and present shots of returning friends. So exiting to see you all again!

The list goes on and on of precious people that surround this memorable event. Although its tempting to show you all 618 of my pictures (no exaggeration), I’ve got to pull it together and end this fun post. As you can imagine, plans for next year are already in order! I’ll leave you now with a collage of photos from my favorite local photographer Luke De Freitas!

Wait, you really want me to climb that thing?

Are you ready for this? Follow along as I take you on a quick journey that guides you to my next entertaining reunion.

Meet Hayden, a childhood friend that I grew up with in Folsom, California. He recently extended his travel wings and met me in abroad in Central and South America. Here we are on a jumper flight in Costa Rica!

20130628-112115.jpg

Remember Ann and Colin? This is the sweet couple that enhanced my volunteering in Ecuador with their fun loving, open hearted energy.

20130628-112259.jpg

Peru is the place in which I got to introduce these three amazing people to each other as we bonded our way to Machu Picchu!

20130628-114451.jpg

20130628-113740.jpg

During these fun days together, we talked about reuniting in the states and how someday they could teach us how to rock climb. Two months later Hayden and I found ourselves heading to reconnect with our pals in the famous national park of Yosemite!

Road trip!

20130628-114711.jpg

Fun fact #1 – Over 4 million people visit this National park a year.

The camping bags are packed and the climbing gear is ready as we hit the path towards Yosemite!

A reunion complimented with the classic handstand shot!

20130628-120815.jpg

20130628-121114.jpg

Fun Fact #2 – Yosemite is home of North Americas largest waterfall which ranks 3rd in the world!

20130629-103555.jpg

Today’s play time will be ascending up an angled rock while flexing, stretching, and “hand jamming” our way to the top! I felt pretty cool walking with all the gear.

20130629-084208.jpg

20130629-084221.jpg

Fun fact #3 – El Capitan is the largest granite block in the world!

We let the professionals find the right rock to set up and give us a quick but detailed lesson on the sport they love so much.

Jump kick in Machu Picchu

Last year, I wrote about some secret tips that were given to me by a local. My promise still stands, if you’re ever going to make experience the sacred city, please write me and I’ll gladly expose a few hints that will enhance your journey! Until then, the secret remains amongst them who have made the trek with me.

4:00am- Alarm sounds to an already awake room of travelers.
4:30- Showered, packed and ready to leave.
5:00- Lined up at the first bus to depart!

20130507-122108.jpg

5:30- Bus ride in the dark to the base of the city.

20130507-122411.jpg

20130507-122416.jpg

6:00am- Whats this? We’re the first people in line to enter the sacred city!

20130507-122451.jpg

20130507-122457.jpg

20130507-122502.jpg

The next 20 minutes is to remain undocumented for the strength of the “secret”… but here is one photo along the way before reaching our lookout point.

20130507-122647.jpg

Once arriving, the fog acted like a curtain that requested patience as it protected the artwork we all came to see. We took advantage of this moment with a few fun photos!

On the way down into the city, I realized that I wanted to mix up the handstand photo from last year . How amazing are my friends? They patiently waited as I ran into the empty field (that was apparently off limits) and snagged the picture. Can you spot me?

20130507-124046.jpg

Are we supposed to go through that dark tunnel?

Last year, I started my Machu Picchu post with what’s written below.

“I feel a huge challenge trying to describe through words and photos the magnitude of energy and massive beauty that this place holds. If Machu Piccu has been on your “list” or this page intrigues you whatsoever, please remember:

YOU ARE THE ONLY ONE THAT CAN MAKE IT HAPPEN… SO DO IT!

20130506-073927.jpg

Before I begin sharing this priceless journey, if you haven’t read last years trek to Machu Picchu, you can do so at Machu Picchu link or The trek link. It has a more descriptive message of the actual route and facts that come with it. This year, it’s all about the friends and the adventure!

Living on the road has brought many new perspectives into my life as well as more than a few unexpected lessons that I plan on carrying forward. Lets be aware of how easy it is to live in “auto pilot” and go through day to day almost in a programmed sense, passing the garden without “smelling the roses” as they say. Ive grown to appreciate all situations in what they have to offer and am constantly reminding myself to be “in the moment”. Today…right now… This is my life.

With that said, I’m going to break up the Machu Picchu adventure into a few different posts, as the entire journey was special start to finish.

Hayden and I met as kids trying to balance homework and a social life while growing up in the small town of Folsom, California. Now, 17 years later, I get to pick up my dear friend from the Cusco airport as we have plans to hike Machu Picchu with Ann and Colin!

Let’s begin with the morning departure from our Hostel in Cusco. The four of us had reserved the bus to pick us up at 7:45 for the 5 hour ride to the base of our walk towards Aguascalientes. 9:00 rolls around and instead of a bus, we got a woman with her child that said “follow me”…. And so it began.

20130504-110856.jpg

20130504-110903.jpg

20130504-110908.jpg

We made a few turns to find a decent van stocked with two drivers, empty seats and a woman urging us to get in quickly, “Vamanos!”.

All smiles as we’re finally on the road towards one of the seven wonders of the world.

20130504-111015.jpg

20130504-111023.jpg

20130504-111041.jpg

The first pit stop is in the open country side of Ollantaytambo for a leg stretch, optional snack and a handstand of course!

20130504-111118.jpg

20130504-111124.jpg

20130504-111129.jpg

Even though this bathroom brought a tiny challenge of it’s own, it’s luxury compared to last year!

20130504-111158.jpg

20130504-111208.jpg

20130504-111213.jpg

Back into the van, I capture us still smiling (for now) as we have new sights along the way.
More than just mountains and clouds, you’ll see several animals and even cyclist who are making me feel slightly guilty of my sore bum.

20130504-111351.jpg

20130504-111418.jpg

20130504-112128.jpg

20130504-111523.jpg

20130504-111536.jpg

20130504-111554.jpg

20130504-111610.jpg

As we continue the climb up in elevation, you can begin to see the clouds roll in and take over the passage. This is almost a relief due to the unprotected cliff side that so gratiously accompanied the one way road. Each time another vehicle would approach head on, one of us would have to hug the mountain side in order for the other to safely pass. Not fun.

20130504-111730.jpg

20130504-111737.jpg

20130504-111744.jpg

20130504-111757.jpg

20130504-111804.jpg

20130504-111814.jpg

See that tiny little bridge behind us with no guard rail? What you don’t see is that it’s barely suspended above thousands of feet of pure straight cliff side. What you don’t hear is us all gasping for air when the back tire didn’t catch on the tracks… Stomach, please return to your appropriate location and heart rate, it’s necessary for you to regulate again for the future of my journey.

20130504-112021.jpg

20130504-111823.jpg

20130504-112104.jpg

Arriving to Hydro Electronica means we get to stop for a quick break before we start our way by foot towards Machu Picchu. A toast, a few fun pics and the adventure continues!

20130504-112241.jpg

20130504-112202.jpg

20130504-112207.jpg

Find the tracks, find a four legged friend and keep on trekking!

20130504-112718.jpg

20130504-112723.jpg

20130504-112735.jpg

Three attempts to get us all in one photo… Fail.

20130504-112543.jpg

20130504-112549.jpg

20130504-112555.jpg

Awesomely awkward shot of all of us… Success!

20130504-113101.jpg

Finishing up the first hour brings more smiles and more more train tracks.

20130504-113224.jpg

20130504-113245.jpg

20130504-113259.jpg

20130701-073842.jpg

From a distance we could here the tracks in use as the train blared it’s horn. We accepted this as a challenge to not only race the speeding beast, but snag a few cool photos too!

20130701-073701.jpg

20130505-103952.jpg

20130505-104002.jpg

20130505-104009.jpg

20130505-104019.jpg

Due to our relaxed pace, the walk took a bit longer than the average “trek”, but we were definitely ok with that. Considering the amazing conversation, great photo oportunities and the memories that came with it, I wouldn’t have changed a thing!

20130505-104208.jpg

20130506-072041.jpg

20130506-072049.jpg

The sun is sinking and adds one more fun element to our already exciting expedition!

20130506-072417.jpg

20130506-072500.jpg

20130506-072512.jpg

20130506-072518.jpg

20130506-072602.jpg

Arriving at night we head directly to get our tickets as the morning will only provide a 4am alarm and a line to depart by 5.

Next step… Machu Picchu!

For dessert… Hugs around the table.

It’s been said that you cross paths with people for a reason, season or a lifetime. In my case, I come across so many beautiful connections, I feel like they all have a reason. Some, for that very moment to bring joy or possibly a lesson that is needed at that time in my life. Others, I bond with imminently as if the purpose was to develop an instant friendship that without a doubt would continue on.

If you’ve been following even for a short while, you can remember Ann and Colin from Ecuador. They’re the adorable couple that came to the Donkey Den as I was leaving. With only 2 nights and a short walk to bond, we made plans to hopefully reunite someday either in South America or even back in the states.

Here we are a few weeks ago in Santa Marianita, Ecuador…

20130427-162007.jpg

…and now Cusco, Peru!

20130427-170011.jpg

We came back together with the intensions of having lunch or maybe a night out, but after a short conversation (and a Cusqueña Negra) it was decided that much more was in our future!

20130427-162113.jpg

Not only are we going to hike Machu Picchu together, they’re going to join me as I revisit the home I volunteered in last year! (To see that full experience click here)

We start by meeting up with one of the other volunteers. Abigail is here from England and was all smiles as we made our way to the tiny village of Huambatio. Follow now as we jump from taxi to bus to a decent walk before finally landing at Club Suyai Wari.

Step three- Gladly return the hugs being passed around the table while holding back the tears of joy that gently fill your heart with the good stuff.

Ann was kind (and brave) to walk with me as I tried to remember the way into the next village. Key word tried, as I forgot that there was a small bus that took you most of the way before the jaunt up the hill. Here we are realizing it, then hitchhiking our way to the finish line. Thank you Ann for your positive attitude during our accidental mini journey!

Getting lost put me exactly where I wanted to be!

When walking the streets in Arequipa Peru you’ll see more taxi’s than cars and more pedestrians than taxi’s. Mingled in with the traffic and rush of the daily busy life you’ll find street side vendors, children in school uniforms and random sights that are typical to the Peruvian culture.

I’ll start with a grand shot of the Center Plaza including the gorgeous mountain that peaks behind it. Although it was surrounded by busy streets, it seemed to bring the freshest air in the city and what appeared to be every bird.

20130423-172343.jpg

20130423-172352.jpg

20130423-172411.jpg

I have no idea.

20130423-172741.jpg

Leaving from here I made unplanned turns weaving in and out of the alleys and side streets just to see what I could find. Please join me as we get lost!

This next photo is special for several reasons. First off, I think it’s precious! Secondly, I literally stopped in my tracks as soon as I heard a famous American pop song blaring from a small tienda. I wanted to snap a photo of exactly what I saw at that very moment. What a contrast to hear Taylor Swift while melting into a different culture.

20130423-173815.jpg

I finally found a street that wasn’t bogged down with traffic and as I rounded the corner a four letter word smiled right at me…. Y.O.G.A!

20130423-213459.jpg

20130423-213509.jpg

Not only was it a yoga and massage studio, but turns out they have amazing food as well! I decided to spoil myself and indulge in the everything they offered.

Here is the yoga/massage room followed by a photo of my yoga instructor and masseuse (which happen to be a happy couple!).

Brace yourself as I reveal the cost for my day of pampering.
Private yoga class, a delicious lunch and a full body massage = Grand total of $24 US dollars!

Isla de Plata! -aka- “The poor mans Galapagos.”

Our morning started off with a walk to the sea where we got some time to observe the daily routines of the Puerto Lopez fisherman.

Observation number 1: Duck and cover doesn’t always work when there are this many birds. One of the sweet girls from our group got an unpleasant drop from above.

20130414-192258.jpg

20130414-193547.jpg

As the boat arrives, it’s requested that our shoes come off for the hour journey to the island. Not to completed without our “yes, I’m on a tour” safety vest.

20130414-193737.jpg

20130414-194157.jpg

20130414-194211.jpg

Along the way they made sure we got the full experience including a family of dolphins playing around!

20130414-194929.jpg

20130414-194625.jpg

As we approached the island, it was clear why so many take time and energy to maintain such a beautiful piece of land. Pirates or locals, maybe a bit if both?

20130414-195148.jpg

20130414-195202.jpg

20130414-195228.jpg

Either way they smiled and gave a head nod as our entire boat made “ooh” and “awh” sounds at the turtles and fish that surrounded us!

They warned her that flip flops weren’t a good idea. In her words, “It seems the urge to say I told ya so is universal”. First one, then both in hand.

20130414-203858.jpg

The trek takes you up, down and around the coast of this gorgeous place with the intention of getting a glimpse if several of the native animals. Up to this point, the only other living creature that seems to be welcoming themselves are the mosquitos that love to squeal in your ear and make incredible eye contact. (I actually got bit on the eye lid!)

20130414-205906.jpg

20130414-202040.jpg

After the climb, we’re back in the boat for a pit stop that we’ve all been waiting for… Sun and swimming!

20130414-203747.jpg

20130414-205152.jpg

20130414-203758.jpg

As we make the final stretch, what Ecuadorian boat tour wouldn’t be complete without motor trouble… Again.

20130414-205405.jpg

20130414-205417.jpg

20130414-205424.jpg

If you notice the swells in the back ground are definitely creating a rock to the boat that leads me to switch places with this poor guy who was getting sea sick. (Sophie and I were making faces at the boat trouble, but his natural expression puts ours to shame).

20130414-205629.jpg

20130414-205635.jpg

Back on shore (lucky for the sick guy) and I leave you with one last photo with a snazzy effect. What a day!

Canoa – a rainy sunrise to a clear sunset!

I was so amped to start my morning off with an amazing workout after scouting out a course yesterday. Well, the “sunrise” brought rain and just for a moment I debated my on my plans. What? It’s just water, let’s do this!

Goal: A warmup run to a strengthening set and ending with a yoga stretching session.

The jog is through the park and leads me towards the water. Apparently not many people were up for a mud run, so I had the whole road to myself.

20130407-092058.jpg

20130407-092108.jpg

20130407-092115.jpg

Time for some muscle building! A simple pull up bar and bench is all I need. This has got to be my favorite bench press that I’ve ever come across!

20130407-092431.jpg

20130407-092441.jpg

20130407-092447.jpg

After the upper body workout I head towards the sand for a jog to fire up the legs… and a quick (overcast) handstand photo!

20130407-092737.jpg

20130407-101656.jpg

I start to tune in on my breathing as I prepare for my yoga on the beach!

20130407-093458.jpg

Turns out it’s not in rain or shine (enter sad and slightly pouty face here).

20130407-093528.jpg

Oh well, the sun is starting to smile so now I’ll show you the brighter side of Canoa!

20130407-101800.jpg

With this town being popular within the surf community, there are several hotels and hostels that line the streets and beach. I actually think there are more hostels than there are restaurants or cafe’s.

20130407-094055.jpg

20130407-094137.jpg

20130407-094301.jpg

Here are some street sights that caught my eye!

Notice this structure is a ceviche restaurant on the left, a mini market in the middle and a home to the right. It’s very typical here for families to live and work from the same building.

20130407-094856.jpg

Once you reach the water, you’ve got your pick amongst little food vendors, jewelry shops or typical bar shacks.

As I was finishing up my walk I met this group of surf instructors and bartenders. No English was spoken, so this connection was based off of my broken Spanish and a constant game of charades.

20130407-100325.jpg

The daylight starts to dim and I treat myself to a sunset. Notice the complimentary snack is popcorn and plantain chips, classic!

The night brings more energy with new friends! She’s from Spain and he’s Peruvian (two of my favorite countries) and now they live in Ecuador. With a sincere invite, they encourage me to visit them in the popular beach town of Montañita. We shall see mis amigos!

Yoga at La Buena Vida!

It’s my morning off and one of the last days here, so I decided to treat myself to a yoga session back at my favorite little spot in town.

La Buena Vida is an artistic hotel offering private villas, massage, yoga and a variety of sweet treats and healthy meals in there open air restaurant. The owners Michelle Miller and Mike Shogren are a young American couple who migrated to Panama in 2005. After traveling Central America for sometime they knew Santa Catalina was their new home to build La Buena Vida from the ground up. Well done my friends!

20130330-135637.jpg

20130330-135652.jpg

20130330-135659.jpg

Following the signs to get to the studio was such a brilliant way to start the day. I think I liked the location and hike just as much as the actual practice!

20130330-135931.jpg

20130330-135938.jpg

20130330-135947.jpg

At the final turn you reach the top of the hill that welcomes you with creative decor and a peaceful ambiance. A silence that’s only enhanced by the birds chiming in, as the wind brushes through the tree tops. Not to get all poetic, but this place really is a sight to feel.

20130330-140041.jpg

20130330-140049.jpg

20130330-140054.jpg

I was the first to arrive and was invited in by Michelle. I’m sad to say that I don’t have a picture of her beaming smile, but trust my words, her calming energy and sincere eyes are a perfect fit for this little heaven in the jungle.

20130330-140231.jpg

20130330-140236.jpg

20130330-140306.jpg

After completing class, I float back down the hill and return to finish up my days here in Santa Catalina.

To the wonderful girls that I got to connect with at La Buena Vida, I thank you for brightening my experience and I absolutely appreciate your shared energy. Peace, love and a gorgeous sunsets!

Knock knock… Another workout!

I’m here in El Salvador and craving a different kind of workout besides the good ol hiking and walking. I look over in our room and see this… A gym!

20130316-075253.jpg

With the elevated step up and the open ceiling, it gives great opportunity to stimulate a variety of muscles. Let’s play!

Starting with some of my favorites is the range of pull ups.

20130316-080300.jpg

20130316-080307.jpg

20130316-080315.jpg

20130316-080321.jpg

A little shoulder action by trying to force the top of your hands through the sides of the door panel. Hold for one minute and when you think you can’t do it any longer, hold for 10 more seconds. Finally when your muscles start to quiver, push for 5 more seconds!

20130317-212555.jpg

A few dips

20130317-215857.jpg

The step was great for a few variations on the classic push up. First by elevating the feet, then creating an uneven ground for the hands to press from. Both of these little changes trigger different muscles.

20130317-220126.jpg

20130317-220822.jpg

20130317-220224.jpg

20130317-220955.jpg

I bring in the elastic band to play with since it’s rare I have a sturdy over hang to pull from.

20130317-221504.jpg

20130317-221529.jpg

More band work using the door handle as a base.

20130317-221709.jpg

20130317-221259.jpg

Friendly reminder to use commonsense and check the lock before closing the door. This will prevent our super hero Walter from having to come to the rescue… I guess this is my mid workout rest!

20130317-222033.jpg

20130317-222048.jpg

20130317-222128.jpg

Finishing up with a couple lower body drills.

20130317-222343.jpg

20130317-222428.jpg

20130317-222446.jpg

A way to get more resistance with the calf raise is to apply pressure above you (acting like an extra weight).

20130317-222733.jpg

20130317-222758.jpg

I think my next “workout” should be a little dancing at the local disco tech…
