A mirror selfie, really Erika?

Yup.  This solo photo and tiny post is for two main reasons.

#1 – For the friends and family that don’t have facebook or consistent contact with me.  Here’s an idea of how the end of each travel stretch usually looks like.

#2 – For me.  In years to come, I’d like to look back and recall the way I felt standing there. So many emotions.

You may be able to recognize the exhaustion behind my eyes.  This comes from weeks of walking, drinking, laughing and minimal sleep that I barely acquired on floors, buses, trains and other random surfaces. You might also see the excitement in my smile to be heading west towards the friends and family who I miss dearly. I’m sure you also saw the random trash can behind me.  Just stating the obvious.

The necklace I have on was made by a kiwi that had moved to Santa Catalina Panama to sell her jewelry at Cafe La Buena Vida. The jacket was given to me by Denise in Amsterdam, I bought the shoes in New York City and snagged the scarf in The Netherlands (my original scarf and boots were taken off of a friends porch, hopefully by someone in greater need). The elephant bag in my hand is the replacement for the original one seen in Sisterhood of the traveling bag. It dubs as a grocery sac, airplane carry-on and my purse.

What you don’t see in the photo below is what’s in the bag on my back. There’s a used dirndl that I rolled up in cling wrap to make it as small as possible, a torn plastic bag stuffed with dirty socks and a pair of jeans that smelt like currywurst and beer.  Of course it also contains my toiletries, more clothes, a first aid kit and invisible bricks that make this thing feel like a bag of rocks at times.

Wouldn’t trade any of it.

Next stop in sunny(ish) California! I’ll be there for a quick visit with some incredible friends as I repack “Big Blue” (appropriately named by one of my favorite blog followers). You’ll notice my posts will be fewer in the upcoming weeks as my focus has turned towards preparing for the next glorious chapter.

To be continued…

Torn pants… A successful Oktoberfest

The day at Oktoberfest can start as early as you’d like, but considering our morning in Hurry up and wait! we chose to enjoy the slow beginning and take our time. Plus, we planned on spending a majority of the day walking around the festival and soaking in the warm sun. For a past similar experiences, check out Oktoberfest, outside of the tents.

To start off, we headed for the main train station and walked from there (with the other few thousand).

Arriving to the festival, you’d think you were at any other state fair or large amusement park.  With happy crowds of all ages, the sound of excited kids is barely heard over the screaming from the passengers strapped in to the sky high carnival rides. The smell is sweet at times of all the roasted nuts and candy coated treats. If you’re near the edges, the scent of bratwurst battle the air with fried chips and smoked fish.

This stubborn German (such a rare find – to be said in an exaggerated voice) said I could only take a photo of his “stein tower” if he was in it or I paid him.  Jokes aside, I got the pic.

2 things about the next collage.

#1. I love the sea of dirndls and lederhosen sitting so patiently waiting for the ride.

#2. I wonder if the graphics on the backdrop would be allowed in the United States. Just a thought.

Even our girls hopped on one!

Check out these swings.  A single person or doubled up… I want to do both!

Not up for the stomach twisting tilt-a-whirls? Just hang out with the other thousand sitting by the famous Bavaria Statue.   All of the upside down activities not treating you well? Just look for the red cross balloon!
After hours of wandering around, we decided for one last hoorah in a tent. Instead of the rowdy group, we went for an old fashioned tent with traditional dancing and locals that… lets say… this isn’t their first go round.

This was a first for all of us. Chairs up and last ones out of the building? I’m honored.
As you can imagine, leaving the festival provided a show for itself with stumbling toes, unrecognizable conversations (if you call them that) and plenty of smiles. I’ve been coming to this event for years and there never seems to be room for fights. I think that’s amazing considering the amount of adult beverages consumed in such a short time. Keep up the spirited energy! The bottom photo is Florian actaully passing out high-fives, well done my friend… Well done.
Coolest photo of the night was snagged by Carina. Gorgeous!
The final train ride home and a walk of fresh air was the perfect ending to our festivites.

“Hayden, are your shorts torn”? Oktoberfest was a success!

I predict a solid night sleep ahead…

Question:

If you only got one day at Oktoberfest, would you choose an outside experience or a day inside the tents?

Theresienwiese

Dirndl: a traditional dress typically worn in southern Germany primarily in Bavaria during Oktoberfest.

Lederhosen: a mans traditional outfit worn in southern Germany primarily in Bavaria during Oktoberfest.

Beer: the number one liquid (even over water) consumed during the 16 day festival.

Time to experience Bavaria Germany at the worldwide known event! Feel free to read Hurry up and wait! to see how we made it to this moment.

Once the doors open there are 2 rules, no running and no standing on the table tops.  Other than that, first come-first serve.  Ready, set, GO!

Once  you’ve claimed your table, you sit patiently like children in the classroom waiting for cupcakes and chocolate milk. The menu is on the table for the ordering all day and the beers start flowing from out of nowhere!

Quick story of the day: Carina and Jenni ordered Weisswurst (a white Bavarian sausage) that requires the removal of a thin skin before you can eat the meat.  I’m used to this process after witnessing in times past, however my sweet girls clearly had never seen such a thing. Please… please enjoy this sequence of photos I captured during the removal of the skin!

Well that was fun.
All righty, lets take a look around and share the glorious energy of thousands of people gathering to celebrate! In no specific order, here’s a series of photos for your own personal tour through the eyes of my camera.

Did I mention that we were still having a blast? My cheeks began to hurt from the laughing, singing and smiling. The energy all around just keeps you going!

Year after year, we’ve kept our classic photo a tradition!

End of the day? Yep.

Hopefully that gave you a decent idea of the fun to be had inside the tents at Oktoberfest. Tomorrow will bring a solid vision of what’s happening on the outside during these festivities!

Random Oktoberfest facts:

Oktoberfest started as a celebration of the wedding between Bavarian Crown Prince Ludwig and his wife, Princess Therese.

There is approximately 1.8 million gallons of beer served every year at this festival.

Paris Hilton is banned for Oktoberfest due to inappropriate dress attire while trying to promote a new product.

Over 4,000 lost and found items turn up by the end of these shenanigans. Last year items included 350 cell phones, 520 wallets, over 1,000 passports, 370 pairs of glasses, 425 sets of keys, 1300 items of clothing, and at least one set of dentures. Even 48 children were lost, then found.

Hurry up and wait!

The 4 of us left Bochum early to make our way to Munchen knowing the others would soon trail behind by driving themselves the following day.

11 hours on a crowded overnight bus (with team chatterbox behind us) made the 12th hour of transit seem refreshing and oddly easy. Once we made it to the main station in Munich, we took a small train called the SBahn to the nearest stop of our new home.  From there, we made the final stretch into a suburban neighborhood. I’m sure due to lack of sleep, the long walk was mostly silent. However, total exhaustion fuled random bursts of spontaneous giggles. You know the feeling!

So imagine this, 3 Americans, 3 Germans and me looking for a place to share. Considering the popularity of Oktoberfest, most accomodations are booked solid months ahead of time and if they’re not, the price is beyond unreasonable.  With 7 of us wanting to stay together, our other option was sharing a dorm room in a hostel which comes with a dozen strangers and a complementary shared public bathroom.

Been there, did that… so we found something else!

Our perfect location was a treasure rental that is owned and operated by an extremely accommodating host.  With his gentle energy Jorj was there to meet, greet and help with whatever he could during our stay. I didn’t get a photo of him, so please check out his page by clicking here.

Just outside of the city, we (voluntarily) packed into a quaint 2 bedroom, one bath apartment. Down stairs provided an open kitchen, the bathroom with washer and a dining table big enough for all of us to gather around.

A couple of cute decorations added a bit of character to our little home away from home.

The bed I chose was down stairs tucked in a cubby that actaully provided some of the best sleep I’ve gotten on this entire trip! (Thank you amazing-o-friends for letting me have “first dibs”)

The rest of the crew had their pick from 6 spots upstairs. By stairs, I mean a completely vertical walking ramp with hand rails and a warning from the owner.  These things are dangerous with too many proasts at the festival!

We’ve all made it!

It’s early to bed since the morning brings a 4:30 alarm clock. If you recall in recent years, the chances of getting in a tent if you’re not there by sunrise becomes slim and hardly likely. For entertainment purposes, please read Inside the tents!  to see what the traditional morning race entails! Here’s a clip from the crowd of eager attendees in years past.

The 4 of us who have been before spent days preparing the others for the exciting bright rise and struggle to the gates. With success, we were all able to get up, dressed and ready (rememebr 5 girls, 2 boys and one bathroom) in time to beat the sun in the German sky. Awful photos, but you get the idea.

 On time and in transit!

Finally arriving to the festival grounds, we continued to amp up our group in regards to the battle that’s ahead.  The crowds… the elbows.. the sea of dirndls and lederhosen… are you ready!?

WHAT?! Are you ready for an empty lot with a couple cleaning crew members and a few other confused people?  I don’t even think I knew what this wooden floor looked like from years past! We finally came to the conclusion that it was our first attempt during the week verses a Saturday morning. Turns out it’s easier when a portion of the city has to go to work.

Well, we did what we do best… which is to make the best of it!  A few fun pictures, some hair play and 3 hours of meeting new friends as we watched the crowd slowly expand.

What’s behind that door?  Our entire day of festivites patiently awaiting our arrival!

Doors open! To be continued…

Would you rather be 3 hours early or 30 minute late?

A waffle, a walk and a picnic in the park

The city of Bochum sits between Essen and Dortmund in the  northwestern part of Germany. It offers shopping, a variety of food and a long street of bars, clubs and pubs.  Our favorite spot?  Just at the end of the strip is Konrad Adenauer Platz or KAP for short. With open air seating for the public surrounded by options of drinks and treats, it makes for the perfect meeting point.

Our choice is one of Carina’s friends who opened an adorable camper providing healthy(ish) options that are all made right in front of you. A sweet waffle or savory crepe, what’s your delight?

Allie and I split a warm crepe with pumpkin, carrots, cashews and some sort of vegan apple-cream sauce.

(Please take notice to her small red sign on the right… LOVE it!)
With good food and a sunny day, we chose for a walk to a local hotspot known as West Park.

I found this location unique considering the grand size of the open green areas that sat directly in front of an old industrial plant. The mysterious looking building is now used as a concert venue.  I’d love to come back and see a performance there!

Blankets, check. Loving friends, check. Snacks, drinks and a peaceful convo in the park, check!

There’s no way I was going to let this backdrop slide without a handstand shot.  What a perfect addition from the girls!

The evening brought more people to the table and left us with a bundle of new friends.

Then one last walk on our favorite strip. Obviously we like to recreate photos and this one was brilliant and completely unexpected! The top photo from 4 years ago includes my dear friend Tiffany (filled in by Hayden) and another gentleman to make the duplicate. Adults being kids… why not?!

What a joyful send off! Now where you ask? The southeastern city of Munchen! Otherwise known as Munich, this is the home that hosts the popular event of Oktoberfest.  Not an imitation party, or your local towns version… but the actual 205 year old festival! This will be my 4th attendance but for the other Americans, it’s their first!

Getting to take them is like what I imagine bringing your kids to Disneyland for the first time would be like. You’re more excited to watch them experience it more than you are even going!

The 4 of us will take the night bus and meet the others that will follow by car in the morning. Good night!

Backpacker fun (or not so fun) fact:

We saved $300 as a group by sufferring through the bus ride verses a sleeper car on a train. Worth it? Depends which one of us you ask.

Fútbol… Not soccer.

Over the years, I’ve been able to attend a variety of professional sports games in different countries.  Like Rugby in New ZealandAmerican football, cricket in Barbados, hockey, baseball, basketball, just to name a few! On this glorious day, my favorite Germans are treating us to an experience that (little did I know) would be the best live sports event I have ever been to!

To get to the game we boarded a train with the other fans and made our way to the stadium Westfalenstadion! Look at this happy bunch, from left to right:

Hayden: Self procalimed “spaz” with a huge heart and deep love for quality beer.

Allie: A peaceful yogi that lights up any room with her smile and dominates speaking US slang.

Florian: An artistic musician with the humor of a German raised in “Cali”.

Carina: The smallest and most fierce cop with the spirit of an angel.

Emily: Pleasantly honest. Her contagious laugh enhances every situation.

Me: Luckiest girl to be with all of the people above.

Now, there’s something to be said about watching your team play and the energy behind it. I suposse that’s why this experience was so outstanding to me.  I’ll admit I’m not a soccer fan, nor did I have a team so origianlly I wanted to attend this game just for a new adventure. It took only minutes for me to not only become a fan… but a fan of BVB!

Let me show you why…

First off, just getting to the game was a blast!

As we arrived you could feel the energy naturally being elevated with the sea of black and yellow. Excited fans aged from stroller bound infants to elderly… men, women, friends, families, this crowd was a balance of it all! I also personally loved the line of stunning horses verses segway patrol.

You won’t find nachos or popcorn at this game, but there seemed to be an unlimited supply of Bratwürstchen (aka bratwurst) and condiments.  Check out the size of the ketchup and mustard dispenser!

Game time! Lets head in and check out the biggest stadium in Germany!

Wait! Pause for a fun pic…
I truly hope that I’m not the only one that gets an overwhelming rush when peaking over the top step and having the stadium open up in full vision.  It’s such a powerful sight! Welcome to the home of Borussia Dortmund… Go BVB!

The game hadn’t even started yet and the crowd was already chanting and jumping in some sort of traditional ceremony style. Honestly, the crowd is what made this one of the best I have ever witnessed. That, and their mascot Emma the bee!

When I thought the chanting was the extent of tradition, Carina snagged my scarf to show us the next step in becoming a BVB fan.  This was such a cool sight!

Think the game is good?  Wait till they score.. Gooooaaalll!!

What a memorable day with amazing people!

What do the happy faces from above look like with a tied game in the end?

Not to worry, we finished the event with our traditional shot! Silly excuse for one more pic, but I’ll take it! The first collage is over a few years from random locations followed by the one from the game today.

Good night Dortmund!

Sports question of the day:

Would you rather have tickets to your favorite sports team for one season or locker room passes for one game?

Friends, meet your new friends!

We had a speedy layover through Denmark, the land of the Danish. Of all the things in the airport, this character caught my eye and I felt the need to share. You’re welcome.

Ok, that’s all from Copenhagen so now a whirlwind weekend in Amsterdam!

Since I’ve blogged about this unique city so many times, I’m going to refer those of you who want more details to the past posts.  Click on any of the following links to see some of my favorite photos and moments in The Netherlands.

Foot, wheels, trams and boats… lets take a look at Amsterdam!

Eat, drink, dance and feel the love in Amsterdam!

How to get lost with incredible people in Amsterdam!

Now a quick lesson on all of the lovely ladies below. I met Denise and Sofieke in Spain, reunited with Denise in Argentina where we met Ioni then all of us came together in Amsterdam. The other two gorgeous girls are sisters from California that I coached gymnastics to almost 17 years ago! Now, they all meet! Hayden was there too, but it was mainly a girls event (sorry pal).

Our evening started with a group dinner at a local tapas bar.

Check out these little human transporting devices. They were like a one wheeled, non-handled segway.  The group would just hop on and zoom off!
Pit stop for some tunes and a bit of laughter, dancing, laughter, talking and then more laughter again.  This angelic woman has been working for years at the coat check section in the upstairs washroom of one of our favorite clubs. I had to remind her who I was the second year, but this time… she made my night.  She got a gentleman to translate, “You’ve come back! I remember you, can’t forget that smile”. She even asked where my camera was. Night out in Amsterdam, success!

The following evening out was a new one for me.  Never did I think I’d be dressing up for an “American western cowboy party” in a small town in The Netherlands. Here’s a few shots from a surprise birthday party of a 60 year old John Wayne fan!  First up, costume! Here’s what I had to work with from my backpack.

The decorations were outstanding. From rifles to bails of hay, cow print baloons and even a wooden stock (the form of punishment in which ones head and hands would be restricted from movement). A live band, a stocked bar and wonderful food made this gathering a memorable one!

I felt like a new kid in school when the entire crowd stood up to partake in a traditional birthday dance.I couldn’t tell you what they were saying or how the dance went, but it was highly entertaining!

Finishing up Amsterdam was a walk to the bus stop with the original three. Here’s a comparison from the first time we met 5 years ago to now. Love you ladies!

Another path crossing is about to happen in the grand country of Germany! Can you tell this is my favorite part of traveling?! I met Carina, Florian and Jenni at Oktoberfest 5 years ago, then traveled to Costa Rica with Carina, introduced Hayden and Florian in Greece and now Emily and Allie get to met all of them! Did I mention that the Dutch from above and the Germans next up also met when there was 4 Germans, 2 Dutch and me?  Sweet paths of life, I love it!

How did we get from The Netherlands to Bochum? A train ride that was clearly no fun.

First thing we do in Germany? Go to a fútbol game of course! Next up… just our small group with 80,000 other fans!

Random bike facts of Amsterdam:

There are over 880,000 bikes in the city but less than 800,000 people and 25,000 of those bikes end up in one of the 165 canals every year!

3,500 bottles of scotch on the wall…

If you read the posts where I tagged along during Haydens candyland adventures back in Ireland, you witnessed a portion of the Guinness brewery and Jameson distillery. Considering we’re in the land of scotch, there are many specific options here, but he decided to participate in the tour that gave an overall lesson of the land and all that’s produced here.
It’s called the Scotch Whisky Experience. When we arrived, they sat us down in a barrel shaped booth and sent us off on what reminded me of a slow carnival ride. It was guided by an automated character that, for lack of a better description, was kind of creepy. It simulated ghosts of times past that explained how it all began.

The photos aren’t the best of quality considering the dim lighting and quick moving characters. I just wanted to give you an idea…

After the tilt-o-whirl lesson, they directed us through a few rooms that went into further detail of the mystery of Scotch making.

The peak of the tour had us all sitting in a room like school children to watch a narrated video. This part was easy for me to absorb and I actually learned quite a bit about the regions, flavors and facts that go into scotch. After the video, we each got to pick a flavor to sample. It was cute to watch the room turn giddy when the bottles came out.

The last step in our informative day was the room in which impressed everyone. Almost 3,500 different bottles of Scotch have been collected and displayed here.

The end of the “Scotch experience” differred for everyone depending on which level you signed up for. I chose the minimal which landed me a glass of water and extra time to take photos of Hayden who signed up for the platinum package. Here’s a kid at Christmas again!

After the tour, food was priority so we headed to a popular pub called Ushers. Hayden ordered a meat pie with chips (french fries) and peas. Suggested by Alan, we ordered a scotch egg which is a hard boiled egg breaded with a meat covering then deep fried. Yeh… umm, not for me but thanks!

Dessert was an easy choice since it’s one of the only things everybody mentioned to try while we were here. A deep fried Mars bar. Yeh… umm not for me but thanks!
After our experimental day, we met up with sweet Mel and friends for a nice moonlit walk and casual drink.

Early the next morning we headed to the Edinburgh airport with enough time for one more handstand shot and a sweet farewell to Scotland.

Funny fact(ish) – Most Scottish people pronounce a “T” sound if it’s in the beginning of a word.  If it’s in the middle, they leave it out.

Example: Tatties (mashed potatoes) should sound like “tat-ees” but they say “ta-ees” and “beautiful” comes out “beu-ee-ful”.

Also different is the “R”.  They either roll it or leave it out completely. I couldn’t get a store clerk to understand me whatsoever when I clearly asked where the “fruit” was.  Poor fella kept asking me what I was talking about.  I finally said “like an apple or banana”, he said (what sounded like)  “Ohh, foot!”

Cambodia… 2 years later, kilts and castles!

Our next quick stop is to the land known for kilts, haggis and castles. Before we dive into bagpipes and scotch eggs, let me share another reason I wanted to explore Scotland.

Back in Cambodia, I was volunteering at the Flicks movie theatre working the popcorn machine with the other travelers passing through. Just before departing, the girl that would be taking my bed arrived early and I’m so glad she did! Mel had just come from Vietnam which is exactly where I was heading so we exchanged pointers, shared a few meals and even made time for a haircut. For that adventure check out the post Ticket for one please and a Cambodian beer

Two years later I’m landing in her current dwelling place of Edinburgh! Here we are back in Cambodia and now in Scotland!

She not only welcomed us into her home, but handed over the key and let us crowd her room with our backpacks.  Thanks hun!

As Mel went off to work, Hayden and I decided to roam the streets of this enchanting place. Here’s what my eyes spotted out while wandering the capital city of Edinburgh.

Side note, there are 3 handstands in this post!

This little cafe had a different persons name on the board each morning. No, we didn’t walk by every day with high hopes one of our names would be printed out front. Maybe.

When I thought this ice-cream truck couldn’t get any more adorable, an elderly couple rolled up and I got to watch the man treat the woman to a cone and a kiss.
I loved this slope of greenery that seemed to be the perfect invite for students to study, couples to picnic and kids to play. On this day, it invited me for a handstand!

It was a challenge to put the camera down since every building resembles a castle or some sort of ancient gothic statue. Even harder was narrowing down the hundreds of photos to the ones on this post!

The heart of Midlothian sits beautifully in the strets of the Royal mile. Executions used to take place here in an old prison and the heart marks where the doorway used to be. Back in the 15th century, locals spit on it as a sign of disgust for the former prison. Now, it’s been told that spitting on it brings good luck… go figure.

This little man was by far my favorite of the day. A magician in training with the quick wit of an experienced comedian.  He was dropping jokes while flipping cards and managed to keep us (me) entertained!

I’ve gotten the privilege to see several places of this magnitude but there’s something special that I felt here. Considering the size and tourist appeal, it still maintains a traditional energy that makes it feel quaint and delicate. Next up will be a mini treat of food, drinks and a night shot of this stunning city!

Quirky questions for the day-

Gentlemen: For one year, would you rather have to wear a kilt everyday or have your mom pick your clothes?

Ladies: An old fashioned princess gown or dressed by your previous (ex) companion?

Every king needs a castle and every castle needs a backpacker.

There are over 30,000 castles and ruins that cover the beautiful country of Ireland. Some small and quaint, others massive and grand. Many are tour sites that take you throughout the rooms and several allow for self guided roaming. Some you can host weddings in and it’s becoming more common to stay overnight (even in the self-claimed haunted ones!). Once Hayden heard that it was possible to sleep in a castle, there was no discussion. This went directly on the “must-do” list. You can imagine how the price ranges quite a bit and I’m sure you can also imagine what this did to my “backpacking mind”. I’m used to sharing meals in order to save on waste and hitch hiking to avoid costly cab rides and now… now my travel partner wants to stay in a castle!? Thankfully it’s true. Without him, I would not experience some of the things we’ve done and for that I’m grateful.

After much research, we narrowed it down to the gorgeous Kinnitty Castle Hotel located at the foothills of the Slieve Bloom Mountains in Offaly. The price was right considering we got a 4 course dinner, full breakfast, an over night stay and a complementary bottle of sparkling wine all for less than your average New York city accommodation.

How do you get to this wonderful palace? You can take a bus to the edge of the city and then catch a cab into the villge where the castle sits.  Or there’s our choice, rent a car and stop wherever and whenever you want to!

Hayden and I teamed up as driver and navigator. I gave clear instructions as he focused on keeping us on the left side of the road (opposite to America). Success! We stopped a few places a long the way like this  adorable fresh fruit stand. I think it’s a great idea to support local businesses that are driven to provide a quality product! I went for some blackberries. Delicious.

After a 3 hour drive leaving Dublin, we finally arrived to our accommodation made of gothic architecture in the middle of this open green pasture.  From the road it looks like the setting from a fairytale, including the horses that greeted me when I jumped out for a photo!

We made it! Judging from my face, I’m not excited at all.

Like several of my recent posts, photos have been speaking for themselves. Lets just look around!

My personal favorite was this court yard. It’s primarily used for wedding receptions but we used it as a breath of fresh air with some great photo opportunities.

Our room made me feel like an old fashion princess… Well, excluding the available running hot water, electric fan, alarm clock and television mounted on the wall.  So, ignore those things and it’s like we were really back in the 1800’s!

After we checked in and snooped around, it was time for our 4 course dinner.  (Way beyond my typical dining). On the menu were options like steak, fish, pasta and a few other quality dishes. All of them of course topped with some type of fancy nut-crusted, herb infused sauce to make it more appealing. Each table was served a platter of grilled vegetables and mashed potatoes along side a bread basket. Dessert gave a list from sorbet’s to cheesecake and delicate chocolates.

The morning began with an Irish breakfast that consisted of several options. People love variety so you can imagine how well suited it was to find porridge, fruit, natural yogurt, meat, cheese, a variety of breads, granola, cereal, eggs cooked to your style, sausage, bacon, smoked salmon, juice, milk, coffee and tea.

Saying goodbye to our room was yet another bitter-sweet.  Who would want to leave a castle? Maybe two backpackers ready to see a different county! Farewell Kinnity Castle, it’s time for a new adventure.

We were in no hurry to get back to Dublin, so we decided to check out several of the villages along the way.  Here are some snap shots from the road!

The last bed and breakfast we stayed in was a home called Heatherview ran by Maura and Jim.  We were there in order to rest and freshin up over night before our early morning flight and it was perfect! A sweet spot, welcoming hosts and a tasty breakfast sent us on our way. Thanks Jim for your “special ingredient” in my Irish porridge!

Backpack on, rental car returned and tickets in hand… Scotland, here we come!

Would you rather spend a year living 200 years in the past or the future?
