Australia Day!

Who would of thought I’d be in the grand city of Sydney on a day in which they celebrate their country!
When I arrived I started looking for places to volunteer but everything was already full so I chanced the idea of wandering the streets in hopes of entertainment. As I finished my breakfast I got approached my new friend Kye, (one of the hostel haircut clients) “Care for a walk?”… “Absolutely!” I say.

Kye is from England and is just as unfamiliar with Australia Day as I am, so here we go “blind leading the blind”… First stop is China Town to see the tail end of the Chinese New Year party. Can you spot the little girl?

Then we walked far enough out of the city to find this adorable bar with a balcony that over looked what reminded me of Sutter street in Folsom California. The first pic is looking up at the bar, the second photo is the view from the balcony of the bar.

On the way to the next stop we saw this spectacular stone door to a local church. A woman wanted to take a photo of the “cute couple”… Sure, why not go with it?!

It is completely true to date for me, there’s an Irish pub in every country. Found it! (this one had quite the Aussie pride).

Did you notice the sign in the left side of the photo? I just did!

After dinner we headed through the street malls towards the harbor to see the highly spoke about firework display. It was the  perfect way to end such a memorable celebration of Australia Day. Thousands of people over looking the water with fountains, lazor lights and colors of fire dancing around.

Thank you Kye for the great company in such a vibrant city. Happy Aussie Day Sydney!
I just thought this was a cool pic.

Packed day in Sydney

I started Wednesday with Aba and Kamal, two of the “cool kids” I met in Europe. The first two photos were taken on a bus in France, the third is us in Sydney at “Darling Harbour”.

Due to the un-summer conditions here, climbing the bridge wasn’t as tempting so I decided to go for the ferry ride! It took me around to different points in the harbour and proved a magnificent view of the bridge as well as the Opera house. The pictures clearly show the dark clouds that are no contrast to the water, however if you look past that, what a neat sight!

After the ferry I took the long route home through the Botanical Gardens. I could of stayed there all day! It seemed to capture earths natural beauty and  produce such a peaceful feeling that totally calmed the mind. With the first sprinkle of rain I thought “uh oh, this is going to get tricky (in a skirt and flip flops) and by the time it had reached a down pour, my water proof camera was out and in my hand as I absorbed the rain like it was a gift…

I will admit that I accomplished my usual unintentional goal of “getting lost”. First Tuesday in the city and again on Wednesday in the gardens. I just kept “oohing” and “awhing” until I realized I was completely intertwined in the depths of this massive jungle. I believed this sign… I don’t think it was very accurate.

This was my favorite shot of the gardens.

What garden is complete without a scarecrow, of course!

I’m a big fan of contrast so this part of the city stood out to me. Tall steel structures behind a vibrant, almost tropical green setting.

I think this tree should be called “please climbuh me”.

Finally found my way out of the gardens and accidentally came upon these landmarks. Spectacular!

Kitchen Cosmetology

First night in the hostel, I overheard Luca (a fellow backpacker from the tiny island of Jersey that sits next to France) mention that his hair was too long. Score! Naturally I offered him a cut, this is the first cut with dreads for me. In the states we joke about hair being done in the kitchen with friends as “kitchen cosmetology”. So what should we call hair done in the coed bathroom of a hostel… Bathroom barber,  hostel haircuts? (Please feel free to insert your own cheesy phrase here).

After Luca was brave enough to let me have a go, I then got approached with a half whisper, as if we dealing some illegal substance, “So… I  heard you can cut hair”. I was actually stoked he asked because he was already rockin a unique style, much fun! Kye is English and Filipino coming to Australia after many other worldly trips.
Back to the trusty toilet room we go!

This marks cut # 6 on the road.

More to come!

Just a quick post to let you all know that the connection is still minimal. I do guarantee a heep of updates with pictures as soon as I can!

For now, just know that I’m thouroughly enjoying my tree cabin and all the work that comes with it. Here they have wild cockatoo’s and parrots that play at sun down and sun up…. Who needs roosters anyway!?

Each morning we wake for coffee and porridge before we put on the gloves and gum boots (rubber boots). By the time the sun is at full rise we are muddy knees in the garden picking what needs to be eaten for lunch and dinner that day. Love it! Then off to the bamboo forest where we’re clearing a way for the new clubhouse to be built.

Around 11:00 everyone stops for noon tea and snack usually consisting of some combo using fresh fruit, yogurt, homemade breads, cakes or a healthy dose of seeds and nuts. Sign…. Me….. Up!

Back to work to finish up by late lunch (today was self rolled sushi with any ingredients off the land and some scrumptious fish)and then the rest of the day is leisure time. Yesterday the entire family and I had our own books, all spread apart on our favorite areas of the property. Ben(dad) was on the outdoor couch, Sarah(mom) was on the lounge chair on the porch next to Ben. Zoe and Tom(the kids) made a “sun relief” hut (a tent) by the banana trees (pronounced “buh-nah-nah” not “buh-na-nuh”). I was dosing off by the stream that runs next to the fruit trees.

Dinner time comes around and we sit outside (every night) and enjoy fresh food and local wine until the birds let us know it’s dessert time. Over dessert (that has ranged between Sarah’s baked yum yums to yogurt, fruit and organic dark chocolate) we discuss the days work and make fun predictions for tomorrow that always end in, “Oh but no
worries, we’ll see what the day has for us when it gets here”.

Im sure you can imagine the incredible pics I have to share, truly looking forward to posting them!

Time for the family beach walk up the coast… Cheers till next time!

Off to the house of trees!

Today I leave for Woolongong where I’ll be volunteering with a family to build a kids club house! In exchange I get 3 meals a day and my own house… In the trees! Yes friends, I will be the happiest, biggest kid climbing my way to bed each night… Can you see it now?! I will take many photos and post to you as soon as i can. Here are 2 pics from the host family of my “new home”.

I have so many brilliant pictures to share with you, however the wi-fi here has been a bit stubborn. Once I can connect with a smooth force, I will update you on all that was beautiful Sydney. From the tours, to the fireworks… And the Bridge to the gardens… All coming soon!

Many thanks to all of you for checkin in once in awhile. The comments from familiar (and new) faces are comforting, encouraging and so refreshing! Please keep them coming 🙂

Hostel living

For those of you who have already had the adventure of staying in a hostel, you’ll be able to follow right along. To those who have not yet experienced the wide range of rooming in these unique accommodations, here we go!

Definition of hostel: A hostel is a budget-oriented, shared-room (“dormitory”) accommodation that accepts individual travelers (typically backpackers) or groups for short-term stays, and that provides common areas and communal facilities.

Photobucket Pictures, Images and Photos

Just like hotels, the quality and price can vary a bit depending on a several different options. Location, is it walking to main shops and attractions? How easy is it to get to and from public transportation? Safe area? Does it come with a locker or do you need your own bolts? Linens… Yup, sometimes they don’t provide sheets so it’s either a towel that you brought or every sweatshirt, pants, jacket and pair of socks all tied together to create some make shift covering. Pillow? You guessed it, your back pack or a rolled up shirt that you didn’t use when making your blanket.

At “The Big Hostel” I’m sleeping in a femroom dorm with 4 sets of bunk beds. Basic math says that’s 8 girls in my room!
Photobucket Pictures, Images and Photos

I lucked out with some super sweet girls. Two from France, Marine and Fleur and the girls in the first picture are from Canada. They have a goal to get rid of this entire bag of Canadian pins before they end their holiday. I was glad to accept one and enjoyed the vibrant energy these two spread. (Ironically we met in the bathroom with great conversation, said good bye and good luck then followed each other to the same room!) Good times and high fives to you ladies!

Some amazing hostels provide a complimentary brunch and/or a kitchen for personal use.  Breakfast options usually range from fruit to an arrangement of pastries, bread, oats, spreads, eggs and yogurt. If you’ve ever traveled with me you’ve seen the simple and creative  (if i don’t say so myself) ways I stretch this into many meals.

The kitchen here is massive with tons of space for personal food and home cooking. The breakfast was bread, butter, Vegemite, Jam, oats and puffed rice. Oh dear, time for the market!
Photobucket Pictures, Images and Photos

These two spreads are everywhere!
Photobucket Pictures, Images and Photos

Other things they may or may not have:  wi-fi, people your age, coffee machine, small creatures, funky smell, door on the shower, free water and/or never forget the selection of VHS tapes that usually include one or all of the following: Back to the future,  Dirty dancing, Benny and Joon, The breakfast club and good ‘ol Top gun.

I like the social vibe created here by the kitchen connecting to the common area. It includes a flat screen, several couches,  2 large tables and what do ya know, a collection of video tapes. They're watching "Thelma and Louise" right now… Classic!

Being out of your familiar space forces personal growth…

Flight to Sydney

Quick post this morning as I’m off to run to the market before I meet up with Aba and Kamal (two pals I met in Europe last year who live here in Sydney). I’ll update you on that later!

This is me, Tika and Chelsea with a quick photo before loading up the car for the airport.

So I’m boarding the flight, and although Im fine sitting in which ever seat with whom ever, there’s always that moment of – ok, what do I get next to me for this round? (“next to me” meaning of course thighs touching, elbow rubbing, aroma sharing, food commenting, breathing on my shoulder, snoring partner, and let’s not mention “let me wake you up…again… To climb awkwardly over your knees with my head ducked because you didn’t stand up so I can make it to the isle to stand in line for the closet of a bathroom…again”).

Fear not my friends, although this was a short flight I got to sit next to this friendly German backpacker who started in Thailand and is now making his way around Australia. His name is Patrick, named after his moms old heartthrob Patrick Swayze. Amazing how quickly you can get comfortable with someone. Great luck to your journey Patrick… You are a sweet one!

I’m looking forward to sharing my huge post about the “Hostel life” and what this one entails, but for now here is what I walked up to… My new front door for the next 3 days.

Melbourne residence

This is the adorable apartment my friend Chelsea has been so gratious to let me room in. Her and her “flatmates” (giggle here) welcomed me as if I was just another roomie. I felt right at home!

Last Day in Melbourne

Last day here in Melbourne. Went for walk just to take in a few last sights and sounds, what a cool city. If you were to tour it from one side to the other (including the outer towns) you would venture through what feels like London with the vibe of Davis and a touch of Folsom. Between the gorgeous high rise buildings, the family parks and the variety of eateries… I feel like this place would intrigue most travelers.

I thought this was a creative concept. Makes one hesitate to spend a dime at other chain coffee shops (that might start with “star” and end with “bucks”. www.street.com.au

Ended the day out at a local beer garden called “The Penny Black”. Brilliant setting, scrumptious food (including one of my favorites, sweet potato fries) and a monster selection of unique beers and cider. www.thepennyblack.com.au

Hurry and vote… I leave tomorrow!

All righty friends, I arrive in Sydney on Tuesday and I start my volunteering on Friday. Thursday is “Australia Day” (celebration is similar to the States 4th of July) which means there will plenty of food, music and entertainment for my stimulation… Woohoo! Beyond that, I would love your help with what else to do… All suggestions are appreciated!
