Edibles!

Introducing the Tropical Farm!

The morning starts off with a bus ride in which my brave mother followed my lead and took a seat. With one brow up, she was on high alert until eventually realizing that it’s all going to be ok… for now. (Enter mischievous grin here).

We get off at the appropriate stop to find our host Mauricio and a motor bike. He instructs mom to climb in behind him and for me to hop on the back with my gear (a backpack with all of our belongings in it). I didn’t snap any pictures of this circus, but it was extremely entertaining to me… As for mom, not so much. With a smile inside my helmet, I take in the surroundings as we make our way towards the farm.

All of the stone that’s used in this kitchen was collected from the side roads and within the village. The cylinder container was created with bamboo and broken glass that was cleaned off the streets.

As the sun starts to set, we’re shown to our room and this my friends… this is when the experience begins to take a turn for my dear mom. Before leaving the states, we had a conversation in regards to the reality of volunteering in Central America. We discussed subjects such as limited food options, less comfortable accommodations, variety of transportation and the challenges of foreign language. Oh how we quickly learn that you can only prepare for so much, as the rest requires a flexible attitude and open mind!

With that said, I feel there are too many quality photos starting from dinner to the long night that’s ahead. I’m actually going to put it in a completely separate (and well deserved) post.

Until the next 12 hours on the farm, I’ll leave you with a couple of photos that find me enjoying a moment in one of the many hammocks.

Day one in El Salvador

While visiting mom, we were reviewing the general layout of the next stretch of my travels. Without second thought out of my mouth came “you should join me, I think it would be a great experience!” After listing all of the reasons she shouldn’t or couldn’t, I then replied with… “Those all sound like reasons of why you SHOULD go”!
A week went by of me discussing possibilities and after hard thought she came to me said, “I’m in.”
Can you believe it folks? One backpack, two weeks, a spanish farm and no french vanilla creamer… She’s in for an adventure!

Now boarding… El Salvador!

20130228-130730.jpg

We landed safely and have an entertaining ride to our first hostel to San Salvador.

Welcome to our temporary home as we plan on returning after volunteering, Hostal Cumbres del Volcan. We had minimal time here, so I’ll share more photos later. Just an idea of our surroundings…

Remember that collection of classic movies I described that every hostel seems to have? Found them!

20130228-133743.jpg

We woke up to an authentic breakfast provided by our host and new friends Sarah and Gladis. Scrumptious!

I asked for some spice and what did they provide…. My favorite sauce!

20130228-134004.jpg

Our next destination is in the small country side of Libertad. We will be volunteering on an organic farm full of tropical fruits, a variety of veggies and other fresh items in need of harvesting. This is also a community in which they guide the local children in recycling product and material to create a sustainable lifestyle. Brilliant! This all starts tomorrow and we are both extremely excited to meet our new hosts. If you’re curious for more details about there organization, here’s where we’ll be!

“Doing work in the AZ” (words by Christie)

Although this post is mainly snap shots of the weekend, it holds a special place in my memory. On the way back across the country (working my way towards the east coast to fly south again), I made a pit stop in Phoenix Arizona to visit some friends. Here’s a quick recap of the personalities that I got to spend Super Bowl weekend with.

I’ll start with the owner of this new home, a girl I met playing with finger paint and Elmer’s glue back in kindergarten, Christie. This woman will add laughter and life to any gathering. With her sarcastic sense of humor delivered with pure love, she keeps those around her on their toes and usually running to the nearest bathroom doing the “potty dance”.
Here we are at age 5 together (rockin some rad hair) followed by a recent picture of her (rockin some rad hair). Thanks for letting me “play” with your golden locks lady!

20130210-073746.jpg

20130210-073830.jpg

20130210-073840.jpg

Next up is Nate. The bodyguard, the the big kid and in my opinion a teddy bear disguised as a solid rock. This is why he makes an incredible travel partner! The first two pictures are from our trip to Europe a couple of years ago, followed by his “character” shot from the weekend. Love this guy!

20130210-075713.jpg

20130210-075541.jpg

20130210-075559.jpg

Then there’s Hayden, I’ve known this fella for a solid 10, wait… over 15 years! To this day, he still has the ability to make me smile no matter what the circumstance. Unfortunately I don’t have any Jr.High pictures available, but if you focus on the two middle boys in the picture below, on the left is Michael (the owner of the bar I visited in Argentina) and to the right (the other red head), is Hayden.
Side note: Look forward to more posts of these two fine gentleman as they plan to hike Machu Picchu with me this year!

20130210-083908.jpg

I’ll wrap up the friend descriptions with Christies perfect match, John. He happens to be my definition of “kind hearted”. I felt at home right away with this gorgeous power duo.

20130210-140553.jpg

So it begins. Here is the house during construction followed by a weekend of playing in the dirt!

What’s this? The ice-cream man! For all if my friends abroad who didn’t get the amazing childhood luxury of an ice cream truck, imagine this… A jolly man in a decorated vehicle driving around your local neighborhood. He’s playing familiar cheerful music that attracts children (and me) for a pick of any frozen dessert they desire! As creepy as it sounds when I describe it, it’s actually a very fond memory! Who didn’t love chasing down a van full of sugar?

Family and treats in Oklahoma

For those who follow consistently, (special shout out to my dear cousin Heather who has wrapped me with support towards continuing these notes. Your enthusiasm rejuvenates me!) you’ll notice I took a holiday from blogging as I enjoyed time “off the map” with my family in Oklahoma.

Family can bring out all kinds of emotions and perspectives in ones life and mine doesn’t fall short of this. I find myself being reminded of the irreplaceable comfort that loved ones can provide. We laugh until the stomach aches, bringing distorted faces in the midst of tears that come in between each gasp of breath struggling to regain control. We remeness of the old days over a cup of hot coffee and indulge in what I consider “down home cookin”.
Here, words like “fixin” (preparing or planning on), “big-ol” (describing the size of any object larger than small) and “ya’ll” (referring to a group of people more than one) are commonly used.

I’ll start off with the first handstand picture! These are my adorable siblings, Joseph, Hannah, Benjamin, Sarah and Rachel.

This time of year brings fun crafts, sweet treats, and quality time around the table. Here are some of the festivities!

To wrap up this trip, here’s a handstand shot in the airport with Roger. Who’s Roger? A friendly smile that I spotted doing acrobatics… who would ever do such a thing in an airport? (Enter mischievous sarcastic laugh here). Check him and his wife out at www.offthegroundcircus.com .

Buddha

Brandon and I decided to be tourist for a day and venture to the 2nd largest Buddha in Japan!

The Great Buddha of Kamakura (Kamakura Daibutsu) is a bronze statue, which sits on the grounds of Kotokuin Temple. Although I had read that is was towering at a height of 13.35 meters (slightly over 44 ft), I didn’t realize it’s massive size until I was actually standing in front of his peaceful presence.

20121114-072044.jpg

Let’s rewind just a bit to the few photos I snapped along the journey there. One thing I love about Japan, and most other countries I’ve seen, is the convenient public transportation. Instead of driving, we got to enjoy our journey with walking, taking trains, getting lost and then more trains… Just the way I like it!

Leaving Brandon’s neighborhood, we start on foot and head towards the station.

20121114-074223.jpg

I have yet to mention the uncountable amounts of vending machines that line the streets, malls, neighborhoods, schools and sidewalks of each city. In 2008 there were over 5 million vending machines here, which means there’s a machine per about 23 people populating the island! Your options range from snacks, drinks and hot meals to clothes, electronics, live fish and other items (that I probably shouldn’t mention on a family friendly blog).

20121114-074103.jpg

20121114-074112.jpg

20121114-075208.jpg

Here’s a fun thought: So you’re walking to work, and you you’re ready for your coffee- Vending machine. Mmmm, a warm muffin and jam sounds good – hey look a VM (vending machine). I don’t really want to hit the store on the way home to pick up my fresh eggs and milk – VM. Oh, I forgot it’s my bosses birthday, I’ll get him a tie – VM. Well shoots, it’s starting to rain… Where will I ever find an umbrella? Of course, a vending machine. I don’t know if I can carry all of this to work today, I better just buy a smart car – Vending Machine!

*You should google “Japan vending machines” to get a kick out of the creative items being dispensed from this handy little devices!

On we go to the train station!

20121114-080142.jpg

Easy enough, just read the signs (enter sarcastic laugh here) and line up.

20121114-080231.jpg

20121114-080245.jpg

20121114-081125.jpg

20121114-081133.jpg

Thirsty after that? Vending Machine! This is an alcohol serving machine that actually cards you before you’re aloud to enter money or select your choice. Can it read American drivers license? I have no idea, I was just pretending to do it. Now I wish I would have tried!

20121114-081402.jpg

We finally reach the entrance of our destination. This is where you have the option to cleanse your hands prior to visiting Buddha.

20121114-081532.jpg

Here is the sight when rounding the corner.

20121114-081641.jpg

Students get to come here for field trips, what an adventure… I wonder if this is extremely exciting to them, or if it’s just another day, seeing another Buddha.

Sushi hopping in Japan

A situation that posed a bigger challenge that I expected was trying to order without someone who could read and/or speak Japanese. How silly of me to assume that the menus would have pictures or English versions. On one hand, what a great sign clearly proving we weren’t settled for the tourist spots. On the other hand, it found us with empty stomachs, holding a menu of Japanese characters with a shy waitress eagerly waiting for our order.

I didn’t feel appropriate taking photos in some of the places we chose to ate at, but here are some shots from a few of our successful and “attempted” meals.

This dining experience turned out to be a noodle specialty house with only 2 tables and 3 tatami rooms with a chabudai (a low setting japanese table with no chairs). We took off our shoes and climbed in.

20121108-215553.jpg

To order, we literally pointed to a picture on the wall and gave a thumbs up (with fingers crossed). She walked towards the kitchen and giggled as she relayed our request. Returning gently with our bowl of delightful goodies, she properly served us after watching our awkward attempt.

20121108-220054.jpg

20121108-231616.jpg

This was a restaurant that provided you with your own grill and a menu of fresh foods including pork, beef, chicken, tofu, vegetables and more. All served to you raw for you to cook at your preference. The boys went with beef and chicken and I complemented their choice with fresh veggies.

20121108-221131.jpg

20121108-221331.jpg

As if that wasn’t enough, Brandon added a bowl of spicy noodle soup. We thought it was going to come out in a cute mini “miso” cup… We were wrong, but it was delicious!

20121108-221657.jpg

20121108-221650.jpg

I just wanted to show the amount of grill smoke that was constantly floating around. I also smile every time I look at the sweet girls face to the left of the picture, adorable!

20121108-222417.jpg

With this evening attempts, we decided to jump on the train and “sushi hop” around a new city. The rule was to split a sake or a beer and order one thing before we move to the next place. We were joined by a willing friend Maddox that was along for the ride! The adventure began…

Snack #1: 7 seats total, one famous chef with a cheerful assistant, a local couple (who loved Brandon’s Halloween mask), an order of grilled peppers with fish flakes and of course… local sake.

20121108-225017.jpg

20121108-225024.jpg

20121108-225229.jpg

Stop # 2: American classics decorated the walls including Elvis records in the restroom and “The Marlboro man” ads lining the hallway. Hey look! We found another local that liked his mask.

Sushi #3: When was the last time you had a beer at a bar with no shoes on… Legally?

20121108-230311.jpg

20121108-230321.jpg

20121108-230342.jpg

#4: We had a hard time figuring out to get into this one. The entrance was a sliding glass door which had a covering that you had to duck under. Following that was pebble stones to stand in before taking off your shoes to be seated. I caught the giggles here (if you know me well, you understand how hard this can be to maintain) and the more confused that Maddox looked, the worse it got. He couldn’t figure out what was so funny!

20121108-230637.jpg

20121108-230649.jpg

20121108-230657.jpg

Last stop: We were the only ones here except the sweet woman chatting it up with Brandon. Friendly bartenders, a funky Dj’s booth and different decor made this upstairs gig a unique one.

20121108-231138.jpg

20121108-231148.jpg

The walk home presented a tiny debate (maybe from all the sake). What do you think… Is the character on the sign an elderly man with a beard or a hamster?

Snacks, Japan style!

This post is the first of few as I look back on my stay in Japan. I feel my time there was way too short and has left me searching the calendar for a return date.

Could it have been the fresh food and unlimited amount of tea options? Maybe it was all of the kind people with their gentle demeanor. Possibly a balance of all of the above in combination with the perfect host.
Meet my exceptional cousin Brandon. A man with a huge heart, a positive attitude, and a sense of humor that left me tearing up as the locals stared in confusion at our ability to laugh without breathing for minutes at a time.
He’s here starting his 6th year in the Navy as a Seabee construction electrician, which is just one example of his strong drive and self discipline.

20121106-051711.jpg

Our grandmothers are sisters and have lived nearby one another for most of their lives. This means, that although Brandon and I weren’t raised side by side, we’d randomly connect over summer breaks and family holidays. Unfortunately I don’t have any embarrassing childhood photos of us on hand, but here we are now!

20121106-052847.jpg

First category, edibles! We had way too much fun snooping around the local shops checking out what was lining the shelves. From confusing items (that to this day we still can’t figure out) to food that found us curious enough to purchase and try at home.

From the hundreds of food photos I snapped, here are a few from each section.
This first one took me for surprise since I assumed everything in Japan was tiny. Check out the size of this apple next to a lemon!

20121106-054139.jpg

20121106-054200.jpg

Pickled everything! This is flavored garlic with some type of herb. We both love garlic so we chose the pink one (you can see it in the background) to take home and try. I wish I could of captured the look on our faces with the first bite. Not only did it taste far from the distinct flavor of garlic, but we were left questioning if this was indeed even what we thought it was! Him and I spent the first half of my trip trying it everyday with high hopes that some new flavor would jump out all of a sudden. “No, I really don’t think this is garlic”, was the common response.

Care for a baked sweet potato? Here, we’ll just keep it warmed up over hot stones at your local grocery store… Love it!

As far as convenience is concerned, they’ve got snack size options dialed in. From fish jerky to pretzels, nuts, single packaged hard boiled eggs, a slice of raw salmon paired with cucumber, rice wrapped tuna and flavored seaweed kelp packs.

20121106-060902.jpg

20121106-060910.jpg

I may have went a little over board when I saw all of these individually wrapped snacks at a specialty store. Each time I visit home from abroad I bring my siblings a variety of treats from around the world that (especially being from a small town in Oklahoma) they’ve never seen and generally wouldn’t try.

Side note: This is a surprise, so if you know my family, shhh….

I wish I could tell you what all of these are, maybe after we try them I can give you my best guess. I know a few are fish based and some are sea greens. We found a tiny jar of marshmallow cream with a wooden spoon and several different chocolate treats.

20121106-070730.jpg

20121106-070712.jpg

I have no idea what these are. The circular item on the left has the texture of tofu or pressed cat food with no picture on the wrapper indicating what it might be. The other is a tube of liquid with what appears to be soggy meat, fish, tofu or dog food. Hmmm, we’ll see!

20121106-071653.jpg

The first is an extremely popular item here that comes in a range of flavors. This is the original chocolate. The second photo is green tea and green tea with cherry blossom Kit Kat’s. Both along side a box of dark chocolate swirled with green tea flavored white chocolate.

20121106-071751.jpg

20121106-071804.jpg

If there is one thing I must add to the list of all countries have in common, its sweets! I suppose we should face the simple fact that most humans love sugar. At the stores in Japan, you can find a huge variety of desserts ready to be taken home and consumed with a small side of guilt… hold the regrets.

This is a sample of the red bean ice cream, delicious! So was the green tea, cherry plum and my favorite… sweet potato!

20121106-062837.jpg

The white and green items are rice balls filled with a sweetened red bean paste and next to them is the brown bean paste coating the outside of a rice ball.

20121106-061909.jpg

Oh no he didn’t… yes he did! This is a hotdog, sandwich styled, banana stuffed Twinkie!

20121106-062055.jpg

A soft chocolate bread, slightly crispy on the top filled with some fudge like frosting.

20121106-062219.jpg

The item at the bottom of the plate is a real baked sweet potato, coated in sugar dust. The other is the same rice balls from above except this time covered in sesame seeds.

20121106-062420.jpg

After all of the store adventures, we’d often find dinner being an assortment of “Ooh, that looks weird” next to “Yum, let’s share that!”. Here is a sample spread… Can you spot the pink garlic that didn’t taste anything close to what it looks like? Its near the black stuff that pleasantly tasted like the ocean. Not to be compared with the sweet teriyaki flavored omelette or fresh salmon slices on Daikon radish. How about out the banana dog-o-twinkie?

This wraps up the grocery food to go. Next post… Restaurants!

Monkey business in Malaysia

Still floating on my cloud-o-joy from the previous day, I reconnected with Brian. He’s the energetic owner of the Green Forest Cafe.

20121030-203757.jpg

I had mentioned my craving for more mental stimulation and active movement. Before I knew it, he closed up shop and set the day ahead full of fun surprises.

Activity #1
A beautiful walk up one of Penang’s hill that brought jungle, ponds, monkeys, trees, orchids, and more!

A fun sitting pose after finding a great spot for the handstand picture… and a great head stand from Brian too! Did I mention it’s his 43rd birthday today? Happy birthday friend!

Activity #2
We headed to an outdoor public park that provides a range of free options for all ages.

A skate park next to a set of graffiti walls. Seriously! Instead of discouraging local artist, they provide a clean canvas and a viewing site.

These are rocks imbedded into the ground that you walk laps on for foot reflexology. With the different shapes, sizes and sharpness, each stone stimulates points on the bottom of your feet that are supposed to activate nerve points to naturally break up acid build up and rid of body ailments.

Activity #3
Aerobics in the park! Free instruction for the community to come out and get their heart rate up. This should be offered in every city! The music ranged from authentic Indian beats to North American country, Bon Jovi to gangster rap and my personal favorite of the day… Old school R&B funk!

Towards the end, the instructor called Brian and I up to the stage to lead the cool down. I didn’t realize I was with a “popular one”, the crowd loved him!

Activity #4
After all the muscle and mind excitement we head for dinner and a show. This center provides vegetarian meals including rice, egg, tofu, curry sauces, vegetables, pancake breads, and more. Mango milk tea or water with your meal and the only price they ask is a contribution that you feel is necessary.

20121030-205310.jpg

20121030-205316.jpg

The show? A set of traditional music, dance and performance by the locals. If you can imagine the brilliant sounds that mirror the colors and facial expressions of these magnificent people… I’m sure you can understand why tears would often peak from my eyes.

Volunteering in Malaysia!

I met Marcel while sipping a health shake from “The Green Forest”. (For more details of that magnificent morning, please see “A ray a green light in Malaysia” from the Edibles page).
He’s the smiling customer sitting at the bar in the blue shirt.

20121029-170035.jpg

During our breakfast conversation my volunteering came up and he said with a spark behind his eyes, “Next time you’re in Malaysia, let me know because I’m very active in the community and I could put you to work”. I responded with “Well then, what are the plans for today?”

After a quick discussion he gave me a meeting point and time. I instantly felt my mind and body fill of joyful excitement!

I met him at our spot and he tossed me a helmet, my first ride on the back of a motor scooter! A little unsure but thrilled for the experience I hopped on, let’s see where this goes. Ps, so much fun!

He took me to a local shelter which was a safe place for street walkers, drug addicts, HIV patient’s, and others in challenging situations.

Turns out they needed some hair services too! Although the following pictures are just me giving haircuts, I wanted to post each face as they all warmed my heart with their sincere gratitude.

After I had wrapped up the salon work, they invited me back to the area where the nurses and care takers gather. Without questioning, dinner was served with a portion of milk tea and more smiles. I really couldn’t tell you who was more thankful for this days events, them or me.

20121029-170653.jpg

20121029-170700.jpg

I’m not sure if it was the cloud I was floating on from the volunteering or the kind energy from Marcel, but I felt like my entire being was at peace for this moment. A safe ride back to my hotel and a hug of hope that we could work together again someday.

20121029-170740.jpg

As Marcel pulled away, I realized my “Thank you” seemed like an understatement for the amount of uplifting bliss that he brought to my time here in Malaysia.

So I send my gratitude once more… Till next time!

Penang part 1

I was craving some “lost in a city solo” time so I thanked Kuldips family for the incredible week and priceless local experience as they dropped me off at the central bus stop. I heard that the island of Penang was one of the most culturally diverse states here in Malaysia. Sounds perfect!

A few hours in this bus and after crossing one of the longest bridges in Malaysia, I arrive at my new destination.

20121027-142101.jpg

Cool effect pic from one of the bridges!

20121027-142349.jpg

I had done my research as far as the hostel location, however I was unclear on which inner-city bus to snag to get there or if a $40 RM cab was worth it. I asked a friendly employee who referred me to a kind gentleman that was escorting an elderly woman (his mom) next to a youthful boy (his nephew). He was so helpful by drawing a map, verbalizing detailed directions and making sure I knew where I was going, then he says “You know what, I’m going that way, would you like a ride?”
(Family, take a deep breath… He didn’t offer any candy).

I felt safe and it was either him or a random taxi guy, so off we went. I kept the map in my lap so he knew that I was aware of exactly where we were going. Upon arrival he thanked me for the great conversation and gave me the spare change from his car and said, “Please use this to call me from a public phone if you need anything at all, God bless.”

What a way to start my adventure in Penang! A quick shot of my room, with the balcony, private bath and a sign that isn’t necessarily “comforting”. But for less than $20 USD I get a glimpse of what it’s like to have own place for a minute… I’m like a teenager with parents out of town for the weekend, almost tempted to jump on the bed in my pj’s!

20121027-142443.jpg

20121027-142453.jpg

20121027-142512.jpg

I ordered a cup of hot water for some tea and this super cool thermos of boiling water came to my room, love it!

20121027-142624.jpg

Right away, I put down all of my things and go for a wander. I’ve been slacking in the “fashion from a backpack” section, so here’s a classic mirror shot of my comfortable outfit to hit the road in.

20121027-161808.jpg

In the actual order that I took these photos, here was my walk:
