Salzburg, Austria – done in 24 hours

I’m not sure if it was the excitement of arriving to a new place or the unmarked streets, but this place was a bit tricky to maneuver around. I don’t think we came to an intersection that had any 90 degree angles, but that just added to the character of this city. Stores built into sides of mountains, caves sitting outside of castles and uneven stone work has an enchanting look to it.

Most of the following pictures were taken from the car as we entered the city and swerved in and out of traffic, pedestrians, one way streets and bike paths.

This photo was taken during an uproar of laughter as we had circled the same path over and over looking for a way out. We finally came to a stop light that would lead us in the correct direction and as we approached our ever so desired right turn, we saw this. All of those signs are shouting, “you will not turn here!”, Hilarious!

After completing the maze of Salzburg, we spotted out a long strip of walkable streets and thought we’d give it a try.
The ambiance through here gave us both the feeling of “the holidays”. All of a sudden I had the craving for a hot beverage, a blanket and the sound of family and friends talking of old times by the fire.
The neatest part of the is quaint city is all of the hidden passage ways. If you blinked you may miss a minature doorway, or tiny alley leading to another road with more hidden paths. We decided to take a chance and see where it led…an open market, score!

To the 100% success rate of finding an Irish pub in every country… Austria, check!

20121006-094812.jpg

Inside this pub looked like a scene from a movie. Small little arches decorated with stone and wooden columns, tiny chairs surrounding rock blocks and tall tables coming out of the ancient walls.

We stopped in to rest the feet and on our way out, Marshall says a simple hello to a girl sitting by herself. The smile that illuminated from this kind woman was felt instantly and then it began…

Meet Niki, she’s from Budapest, which happens to be one of our destinations on this road trip! What a great opportunity to get some suggestions from a local. Here are some snap shots from our evening that started with a hello and ended dancing till the sun was peaking over the castle on the hill.

20121006-100706.jpg

20121006-100735.jpg

Jay is the name of the gentleman next to me. He’s from Boston and added even more of a great vibe to the evening. I do believe he was the one that pointed out that we were in Austria, listening to American classic rock, watching euro futbol, in an Irish pub with a Hungarian and Belgium being served by a bartender from New Zealand. How much fun is that?!

20121006-100756.jpg

20121006-100820.jpg

20121006-100827.jpg

By the end of the night sweet Niki had invited us to stay at her place when we get to Budapest and she would show us the local side of Hungary… Priceless!

The morning brings us stretched out in our car-o-accomidation with the idea of a quick hike before we depart for our next stop.

Real quick story: we wanted to climb to the top of this hill that had almost 400 stair steps and a stretch of hills. Remember the tricky roads? Well, trying to find a parking spot near the bottom was not looking possible. Through Marshall’s “Bond” moves, we find an open lot that had no signs. Were we legally allowed to park here… Would they tow our car?

After 30 seconds of debating the consequences, we both smiled and said “Let’s do this!”. Forget the casual hike to the view point, we have a time limit now to prevent the car from being locked up on the back of a monster truck. I truly wish there would have been a film crew following this 8 minute trek that should of been a peaceful hour of panoramic views.

To give you the best idea of this event, I’ll post every attempt to capture a view while sprinting up hill weaving in-between tourist. When viewing these pics, try to imagine the sound of “happy” coming from us, you know, the kind of laughter that force your eyes to water while searching for your next breath.

Small break…

To all of the people who have encouraged this blog, I thank you. I thank you for the consistent support in my expeditions around this beautiful planet as I connect with new places, vibrant cultures and intriguing people.

Unfortunately technology has brought a challenge to my blogging experience as I search for a new photo uploading program. Any suggestions are welcome, so please feel free to email me at:
Universalaughter@yahoo.com

Until then, I’ll give you written updates on the incredible places I’m exploring and save the photos for a later post. Once I’m back up and running, I encourage you to grab a glass of wine, a bowl of fruit or whatever makes you smile and sit with me as I recap my journey.

As of now, I’m circling the gorgeous country of Spain with a full tummy of tapas, wandering eyes searching for my next handstand and a pure smile of peace.

Cheers till next time!

Just the beginning of Barbados!

As you saw in the last post, I was able to experience Barbados with my mom. I’m so stoked to be back and will have much to share this round!

As I introduce you to this island of peace, parties and paradise, you’ll get to meet my amazing friends who have welcomed me to the “locals side” of life.

How we all first met was actually back in Folsom (my hometown) at the WOZ cup last year. Pause… WOZ cup? This is a tournament in which all of the best Segway Polo teams gather for a championship. Pause again… Yes, I said Segway Polo! If you want to see details of this unique sport, you can check it out at
www.segwayhtpolo.com .

I went to the tournament to visit my mom which was volunteering as a timer for the matches. As soon as I got there, she walked me to the field to meet “the coolest people here”. The team from Barbados!

Here we are last year during WOZ cup in Folsom, Ca.

I set plans to head back to the island during what they refer to as the wildest week of the year. This is the annual celebration of Crop Over which includes a variety of festivities. Those posts will be coming soon!

For a sneak peak at what I have to look forward too, check out the website at barbadoscropoverfestival.com .

Before I folded it to a wrinkly mess, I definitely had the coolest welcome sign at the airport…Thanks Ryan!

Good morning Barbados!
We combined my typical breakfast with a little Caribbean flare… Notice the fried plantains? It added a nice sweetness to the plate.

Right away I got to reunite with the entire team during one of their practices. If you look at the photo with the bus in the background, it’s actually tourist taking pictures of this world traveling team. Adorable.

Here’s my host and dear friend Ryan teaching paddle boarding at his office (poor guy). His work ethic sends him to the beach at the drop of a request from either a local improving their skills or a group of tourist looking to just try it out. His prices are right especially with his knowledge and “fun facts” about Barbados. You’ll walk away with an experience beyond a board and paddle. If you ever get the pleasure of seeing this beautiful island please give him a call for some memorable lessons!

This is “Cuz”, a food shack that sits water side and serves up one option, fish sliders. You can pick from plain, with an egg, or with egg and cheese. This little hut was actually featured on The Today’s Show in the set of “Where in the world is Matt Lauer”.

Snack time! I found a spiked green item that resembled a Cherimoya which is one of my favorite fruits from South America. Turns out it’s in the same family, but this breed is called a Guanabana, also known as a Soursop. I then opened up a starfruit and scooped some of the Greek yogurt I scored directly into it. Viola, a scrumptious treat!

I stumbled upon this gem by accident, hooray for unexpected path crossing! Meet Nicha, the owner and operator of Body Restoration .
This wonderful place is a whole food store that provides an impressive selection of organic based products ranging from skin care to snacks. I pleasantly lost track of time snooping through all of the goodies and thouroughly enjoyed the uplifting conversation with my new friend. Thanks for the info girl!

Mikie (who you’ll get more of later) and his wild Monkeys! They Casually hang around and know just what to do when he reaches for the banana box. If you look closely at the 2nd photo, it’s a momma with her baby, precious!

Awh… I was given a “poor boys proposal”. As children on the island they would pick these White Frangipangi flowers and bend the pedals to create a ring. A handmade gift for the girls that was given as a flirtatious gesture. I can remember the boys back home just chasing us around the playground with some sort of slimy creature. Well, I finally got my ring.

Ackee fruit is common here in Barbados, however if you ask for an Ackee in Jamaica, they’ll hand you you something completely different.
Notice that we’re in a car. That’s because people stand next to main roads and highways and wait for a buyer. You just wave them over and seconds later, fresh Ackee!

Step one – Get a bunch.
Photobucket Pictures, Images and Photos

Step 2 – Split it gently open with your teeth.
Photobucket Pictures, Images and Photos

Step 3 – Eat all of the flesh off the seed. They’re sweet with an ever so slight tang depending on how ripe. Love them!

Fact of the day: This island is approximately 21 miles long and 15 miles wide with over 3000 hours of sunshine a year! The average daytime temperature is between 29-31degrees Celsius (that’s about 84-89 Fahrenheit).

Not just a Dolphin Tour

I like to focus on the present with a positive look forward, however just for a moment I’m going to step out the “travel blog” and tip toe through a bit of my past personal life. I feel this is necessary for you to grasp the emotional energy that surfaced during this part of my journey.

Please take note that some of the pictures and comments might “hit home” or “strike a cord” with some of you depending on your own experiences. I mean no harm… Just sharing what I view as a beautiful story.

Pamela is her name. The woman that carried me, delivered me, and raised me.
Photobucket Pictures, Images and Photos

I claim my mother to be one of my biggest fans. Most parents tell their children that “You can achieve anything you put your mind to”.
When my mom says this to me, she’s teary eyed and expresses it more like “I’m so amazed by you. You’re something special on earth and I love watching you accomplish your dreams. You’re going to impact so many people and I’m proud to be a part of it.”

Yeh, I know… What do you say back to that? I feel like “Thank you” is an understatement for the unconditional love that she has supported me with all of these years (even the moments in which she claims aliens took her sweet girl and replaced her with a teenager).

Her story went like this:
Mom in the middle of 2008: “I have an abnormal mark on my breast”.
1st nurse practitioner gives Mammogram and exam: “Looks like you’re fine.”

6 months later

Mom: “I know my body. I don’t know what’s wrong, but something isn’t right.”
Nurse practitioner orders an ultra sound: “The ultra sound shows nothing to be concerned about”. During the test, the nurse tech mentioned that mom had dense breasts and that can make it difficult to read.
Mom: “Try again, look in a different spot”.

3 months later

Mom went back and asked for a different doctor. They sent her to a female surgeon.

New Doctor: “I haven’t seen your films, but nothing is jumping out at me. Breasts can change over time and this is normal.”

2 months and and many phone calls from my mother to the doctors…

Doctor: “For all patients who think they have cancer, following everything you’ve had done, the next step is a fine needle biopsy”.

First two came back negative so they followed up with a third fine needle biopsy.

It’s now September of 2009

Me: “Mom, I trust you, but they did tests and said you’re clear. No more stress ok?”
Mom: “Not ok.”

Doctor calls to set up a PEM Scan (Positron Emission Mammography).

Test results showed cancer and encourages them to give her a PET scan and a Needle Biospy MRI.

After 2 mamagrams, 2 Ultra Sounds, 3 fine needle biopsies, a PEM scan, PET scan and an extreme amount of persistence…

Stage III Breast cancer.

Nov 23, 2009- Bi-lateral Masectomy with 22 Lymphnodes removed.
January 2010- 6 months of chemotherapy (she refused 6 weeks straight of Radiation treatment).

Obviously all that was described above included many long nights, dreadful hospital visits, tears, exhaustion, teamwork, support from friends, patience, courage and an uncountable amount of hugs.

The morning she woke up with a rainbow of hair on her pillow, she called me that day. “It’s time to take it off”. With a hesitant but courageous stride she walks into my shop and sits while I prepare the clippers. Leave it to us to have a little fun with it.

The beauty underneath it all…
Photobucket Pictures, Images and Photos
Photobucket Pictures, Images and Photos

Personally, I think she dominates the bandana look.
Photobucket Pictures, Images and Photos

Then we head in for her first treatment. Previously they inserted a device underneath her skin so that they would have a direct line site rather than peircing her arm or hand each time. This was the first time it was put to use and not the last time I held her hand through it… Literally, I didn’t miss a session.

All hooked up.

Moms sassy side kept my faith up…
Photobucket Pictures, Images and Photos

..and her attitude kept the treatment center smiling.  Really take a look at the nurses, that’s not fake.  They loved her!
Photobucket Pictures, Images and Photos

They kept the room super cold but always had a heated blanket for us.
Photobucket Pictures, Images and Photos

During her treatment she would often say “When (not if) I make it through this, I want to be on an island.  Just give me sun and warm sand next to pretty water.”
She had no idea, but during this entire process I was planning to make it happen. So after her first “clean” test (and first haircut) we jet set to the gorgeous island of Barbados. What a vibrant place to celebrate her 50th birthday of life!
Photobucket Pictures, Images and Photos

She’s happiest near water so I set up a submarine tour.

Goofing off on the boat.
Photobucket Pictures, Images and Photos

Before and especially since her cancer she has developed a “bucket list”. A list which includes the day that made my trip to Panama City Beach such a memorable one.
BLUE DOLPHIN TOURS is owned and operated by extremely kind people. Ted and Karen have a warm-hearted nature that is present in all conversation and a welcoming spirit that invites you in. If you are ever in this area, I can only suggest to the best of my ability to check this out. It’s an unforgettable experience!

www.bluedolphintour.com .

I could write chapters about this excursion, but I’ll keep it to the point with some fun pictures.
On this day I got to watch my mom go from a  51 year old “survivor” to a “full of life” 12 year old!
Photobucket Pictures, Images and Photos

This was our guide, Russell. He was another great addition to the day, in fact, he made the “tour” feel like a day on a boat with friends. His knowledge of the water and everything in it was impressive and comforting. Thank you Russell!

We got to make him blush.

I chose to stay in the boat to capture these moments and had no idea of the emotions that would play in my heart. To see her truly happy from within, absolutely made my heart smile.  At one point I had teared up with inexpressible joy. My mom was finally in the water with these amazing creatures, doing what she had always spoke about.

What happens in Vegas…

“What happens in Vegas, stays in Vegas”….for about 18 seconds until it’s shared on Facebook.

This post took awhile for me to complete due to the mixed emotions I have in regards to the intensity of this place on our amazing planet called Earth.
If you’ve been following me for even a portion of the time, you’ve hopefully been able to feel my growth in areas like appreciating what I have, not wasting food, honoring my body and respecting others.

“Toot toot!” (That’s me blowing my own horn. Just thought I’d prepare you for it).

I believe in balance. I feel fabulous with healthy eating, but will rarely pass up a frozen yogurt or sweet potato french fry. Sleep is necesary for humans, but I’ve absolutly danced till the sun came up (ironically usually in Vegas). Although I choose water as my drink of choice, I can also enjoy a good beer or mojito (which I’m sure must have a vitamin or two in it, right?). If I choose to eat out, I’d rather split a meal so there’s no waste or over eating. I use electricity, but turn off unnecessary lights to save energy and I love creative fashion, but don’t feel the need to spend an abundunce of money “shopping”.

Well, Vegas doesn’t necessarily promote such things and this was a bigger challenge for me than I expected.

Other wise known as “Sin City”, this is a place where they say “anything goes”. As long as you’re 21 years of age or in some cases 19 with your cousins ID (which I am not condoning) you can arrive in this wild destination and play 24 hours a day. Gambling, pool parties, fancy drinks, dance clubs, entertainment with some of the top Dj’s in the world, famous chefs and many other almost unimaginable things.

This location will welcome you with high energy, remove your ability to sleep, take your voice, and politely kick you out while asking you to stay. That sentence only makes sense if you’ve been there… With me.

So why did I choose to go back this year? A different experience.

I am lucky enough to have incredible friends that live there. Yes, they actually have a real house with a front door, a dog and a back yard! They go to work and cook… In their own kitchen!
All jokes aside, this couple is one that I admire for their sincere care for one another. They respect themselves and appreciate what they have as a power duo. Inside and out they exude a beauty that should be described as welcoming, open minded and exceptional.
*Please see picture below to confirm the glow that radiats from Sabrina and Mark.

This my buddy Rob, an all around gentleman. You can find him either working hard or playing hard… smiling, opening doors, and always making you feel like a queen for the day. Thank you again friend for another memorable day in Vegas!
Photobucket Pictures, Images and Photos

I believe there are bigger reasons for things to fall into place, especially when it wasn’t planned or expected. This happens to all of us, I just think some are more aware of it than others.
While sitting poolside with Rob, we start chatting with two friendly fellas that had complimented my tattoo. Before I knew it, traveling was brought up and viola… New friends!

The “responsible one” holding the folders, actually working on this gorgeous day while enjoying a cold drink (my kind of pal) is Kit. He has the vibe of the “coolest dude” ever… Old enough to have done it and young enough to do it again.
The happy guy directly to my left (third one in) is Marshall. Turns out neither one of us could of predicted the friendship that this poolside meeting would entail. Our new connection should be described as extremely entertaining, awkward, and the most comfortable that a “Vegas” introduction could bring. High five to you Marshall!

This was one of our unexpected stops. It started out as a cover band performing to an empty dance floor surrounded by tables of people starring into space as if they didn’t know what to do… Then enters Erika and Marshall! We start the dance party and before we knew it, it was a crowded floor and a lively band! The first pic is me shaking it with a man that used to be a professional dancer until he was paralyzed. They said he’d never walk again… They didn’t say anything about not dancing again!

This tunnel that had a moving walk-way with rotating colors! Let’s pause for a minute… It’s a power belt that carries you for several hundred feet so that you don’t have to walk yourself… Hmmm, this is one of those things that makes me wonder about our future.

Vegas is well known for look a likes wandering the city and many shows duplicating famous stars from the past. I ran into Elvis.

Photobucket Pictures, Images and Photos

As you can see, it’s a very entertaining destination that can easily draw you into a world that almost hypnotizes the brain and body. It would be silly for me to say that I don’t enjoy my time here, because I do. However, when I step back and look at the reality of the energy and money spent to keep Vegas going, makes me wonder where else we could put that kind of force… And if we did, what a difference it would make.

*please note some of these pictures were taken from a phone so please ignore the blur. Also, if you really want to see the magnitude of Las Vegas, I highly suggest searching photos online!

As I look back at the month spent with my family, I’m proud to say that I truly enjoy the precious moments with this quirky group of loving people. Of course family time is personal, but here’s a small snip of last month.

Ohhklahoma!

Hello again! After my last post, I put the blog away as I flew back to the states for some quality family time. First stop… Oklahoma!

Although I was raised in California, I’ve been coming back here for years so it’s very familiar to me. To the several people who have never seen this place and for all of my amazing friends abroad (who haven’t taken the time to research “middle America”), here is a quick look at the country life in Oklahoma.

This is looking at the main street of central Agra. When I say “main” or “central”, I mean the only road in town that has THE school, THE gas station, THE post office and THE cafe.
Photobucket Pictures, Images and Photos

These were all taken from the road traveling in-between Agra to the next “big city” called Stillwater.

Okie (pronounced Oh-Kee) – A native or inhabitant of Oklahoma. The term Okie is usually used in slang describing an uncivilized person, a redneck, or a person from Oklahoma. Usually used in the negative.

Sonic is one of the top selling fast food joints around here. It still uses the old fashion style of parking at an open spot in front of the restaurant and waiting for the waitress to come out to you. Some of them still wear roller skates!

Funny sights I thought I’d share.

I found these at the local gym… Only in Oklahoma.

Really? Yep… In a local garage.

Ill have one more Oklahoma post before I depart for my hometown of Folsom California!

Last weekend in Peru

After Huacachina, I caught a 5 hour bus ride back to Lima for my last weekend in Peru. Ashgan and Simon stayed back to plan their next leg of South America as I load up and head out.

Some pictures from the bus ride.

With only two days in this huge city, I follow my usual routine and get lost.

Performing artist on the streets! (although it would be entertaining, the kids were not break dancing to the traditional band on the left).

These two lovely ladies knew as much English as I did Spanish which made for great conversation! Sweethearts.

Look what I found! An outdoor gym over looking the coast.

Peru, you have a special place in my heart. Thank you for sharing your culture with open arms, beautiful wonders and positive energy!

An afternoon flight sends me north with a layover in Columbia… I’m back to the United States for a temporary visit. Always great to see friends and family (Who started to believe that I would never come back!)

Do we look like little kids on a holiday morning? Felt like it!

Getting all strapped in for the buggie ride to the peak of the dunes. This is one of my favorite pictures of Ashgan, what a darling smile!

…and we’re off! (clearly not having any fun at all).

We made it to the top with time for some quick action shots. Please keep in mind our shoes are standard snowboard boots, meaning it would have been easier to handstand with center blocks strapped to my feet. I really have no excuse for my late jump in the third picture… Way to go Simon and Ashgan though!

Thank you Augusto for a great day! (Including the mouth full of sand you so kindly offered mid flight and let’s not forget the bruised bum from the “landing” of your ever so talented jumping skills). All smiles though!

Machu Picchu

I feel a huge challenge trying to describe through words and photos the magnitude of energy and massive beauty that this place holds. If Machu Piccu has been on your “list” or this page intrigues you whatsoever, please remember:

YOU ARE THE ONLY ONE THAT CAN MAKE IT HAPPEN… SO DO IT!

Earlier in the week we met a retired tour guide. He invited the 3 of us to sit close as he described in full detail the secerets of making the best of this experience. From the less known routes to the best times to be in certain places. He was so kind to “let us in”.

TAKE NOTE: I will not be exposing all of these hidden treasures. If you are arranging to go to this sacred place, please email me directly and I will then possibly share more information… Maybe.

3:30 alarm clock and my eyes have no problem adjusting to the dark as I tip toe around the other backpackers who are peacefully sleeping their “sunrise on the mountain” away (enter sneaky giggle here).

We are on one of the first busses to the top of the ridge and can actually see the entrance gates! I must add during the ride we met a sweet girl from Switzerland that was traveling alone… A new friend! We invite her to join us and now there are 4.

As we near the gentleman taking tickets, I hear “passport ID please”…. I feel my heart hit my feet and my stomach hit my throat. I didn’t have it on me. I had made it all the way to the entry gates with no form of ID to prove that I, Erika Young was indeed the ticket holder of “Erika Young”. He asked me to step aside so others could enter. As I make eye contact with my sad stricken friends on the other side, I realize there was no “talking” my way through this one.

I closed my eyes (seriously stood there with my eyes closed for a min) and said to myself “he will let me in”.

I hear “seniority…miss!” I opened my eyes to see him flagging me over. As I approach he says “I’m only allowed to excuse one a day, go ahead.” I may of heard bells of “Hallelujah” at that moment, either way I take only a second to thank him then rush through before any mind changing could happen. I’m in!

We follow our confidential intstructions from our new friend (the retired tour guide) and up we go. Steps, stones, rocks, stairs, curves, cliffs and ridges… We reach a peak and stop to observe the sun rising over this beautiful city. Please excuse the bum shot but I wanted to show the extreme of some of the steps.

Not only are we alone up top, but observe the number of tourist that haven’t reached the lower city yet:

After watching the sunrise and toasting to the incredible beginning of this adventure, we make our way down into the city.

On the left is a woman who was in the much later years of life being piggy backed all the way to the center… What’s your excuse?

…and of course I was honored to add this one to the list!
