Ready for the hike! Where’s my blindfold?

Matt and I decided to hit the road and camp for two nights. No, not glamping as seen in the most recent post but good ol’ tent and dirty toes camping!

Day one brought us to Pine Log State Forest in Northwest Florida. The drive alone was enchanting!

Step one, set up camp. Step two, sage the site. Step three, go for a hike!

This trek started like none other as Matt suggested we approach it blindfolded! He read about a method in which you trust your instincts while embracing the other sensations around you. The sounds, the ground beneath your feet, the wind against your skin, the tree branch piercing your hip… I’m in!

Once the bandannas were removed we kept walking and I did find myself more appreciative of the glorious sights around us. Not only the ability to actually see where I was going, but the visual stimulation that came from such beautiful scenery.

We were “almost there” Matt confirmed a half dozen times (when clearly we weren’t) as we reached a sign that informed us that we were just barely a little over half way. Honestly it was so refreshing out there, neither one of us minded the extra walk as we laughed it off and kept going. The final stretch was well worth the long way back!

Dinner was veggies and chicken. Those who know me well, have the right to assume that I stuck with the veggies and let Matt battle the bird. With our powers combined (for all you Captain Planet fans) we had a delicious dinner!

The sun peaking up was warm enough to draw you out of the tent while the chill factor had you reaching for a beanie. Camping weather at its finest!

So turns out we forgot all utensils, but remembered the French press. Go figure. Best backyard barista ever!

Breakfast? Matt thoroughly enjoyed his blueberry muffins as I awkwardly stared deeply into my yogurt.

Me: “I think there’s raw chicken water in my yogurt.”

Matt: “What? You still going to eat it!?”

Me: “Yep.”

I had opened it the night before and carelessly put it back in the cooler as if the ice wasn’t going to melt and allow most items to be completely submerged. Don’t worry mom, I scraped off the top layer first (to be said with love in a sarcastic backpacker tone). After consuming the twice blessed breakfast with fingers crossed, we packed up and hit the road to the next adventure! Miles up the highway brought us to Ecofina Creek and the popular Springs.

Just get in!  Sounds easy right? This is until your big toe scrapes the surface of this ice box! For most, this would be a lengthily process of creeping your way inch by brutal freezing inch. For me, it was all or nothing. Head first with no room for hesitation. And for Matt, I’m convinced he’s part marine life.

Deeper into the springs provided more quality shots and the occasional curious substance between your toes. Feel a little nibble? It’s just the fish providing a complimentary pedicure.

Last stop before finding our new sleeping location is called Devils hole. A hidden gem in the shape of a circle with depths only divers can tell you about. Last time Matt was here, he said it was dark and with fairly foggy waters. Today, it’s clear blue!

The second site was set up quickly as we decided to ditch the tent and go rugged in the open sky. Hammock… check. Sage… Check. Hanging light… check. Good night!

How could I leave this place without a handstand photo?! We returned in the morning to the ice box Springs for a well worth shot, great capture Matt!

Several of the marvelous photos above were from Matt and his quality (aka- fancy or big boy) camera. For more of his work please visit the Stone Sharp Images webite. Care to see his version of our trip? Click here for his blog post!

Excuse me glamper, did you say S’moreberry?

Some girls go to Vegas, others hit up Mexico (I’m guilty of both) and a few hit the sticks! Mom and I joined our dear friend Gloria for a ladies only camping weekend! Or maybe we should classify it under Glamping, defined as – a style of camping with amenities and in some cases, resort-style services not usually associated with “traditional” camping. Of glamour.

Meet the girls!

Now welcome to our weekend view! This beauty is located at St.Andrews park in Panama City Beach, Florida.

Sun-up is our alarm for a walk into the hmm, can’t really call it the wilderness and it’s not a town so we’ll just go with, a walk in the outdoors!

Things you may see on a stroll through the paved wilderness. Birds, berries, butterflies, Bambie, bikers and the random tree huger.

As you trek the great pavement, you get to see how others have set up their site as well as where these campers have ventured from. I originally took photos of all the different license plates to show you, but then I realized that may or may not be crossing personal information boundaries. So, for what it’s worth there were over a dozen different states in just a short 1/4 mile stretch.

A bit up the way we explored an old Mill. I felt like kids on a field trip!

Other things we saw along the way.

This woman was collecting trash throughout the property. Thank you ma’am!

What’s this? An adorable set up that appears to provide a stage and seating for special events. To me… a handstand podium!

Arriving back to the site brought on dinner followed by a friendly round of games complemented with a proper girls toast. These are those moments that, through laughter and genuine conversation you try to appreciate every beautiful second.

Confession: the main reason I go camping is for the fire at night

How many girls does it take to open a folding chair? We don’t know.

On this evening, we brought out the ingredients for traditional s’mores (a delicate sandwich-like treat composing of chocolate and toasted marshmallow being held together by graham crackers). As we’re roasting, or in my case igniting, the marshmellows, mom gasps with excitement. “I’ve got it! What would this taste like with a warm strawberry inside?” Of course the next step was to try this campfire creation. Thus, the new dessert she appropriately named S’moreberry.

A special thanks to Gloria for sharing her space, energy and time. Our conversations are still present in my mind and I’m so grateful for the love and support. Cheers to the gypsies at heart!

All American Holiday – part 2

In the previous post, Fish fry and fireworks, we saw an example of what some choose to do when celebrating Independence Day of the USA. Now lets move on to two more common ways that people spend the 4th of July.

Camping! This term is used loosley as there are many different types.  There’s vacationing in a cabin with running water, bedrooms, toilets and well… a solid roof. Then you’ve got the hardcore backpackers that make a path into the wilderness and chop up their wood to ignite a fire. The single flame that will provide heat to cook with and warmth to nestle next to while curled in their sleeping bags.

The average idea of camping involves tents, picnic tables and make shift kitchenettes. This year, my cousins took the middle ground and invited me to join them at Keystone Lake!

If momma bear in the photo below looks familiar, that’s because you saw her with “little bear” in her belly in the post When it rains, it freezes.  Now look at the whole family!

Even though I didn’t stay long (due to my connecting event described below), we still made time for a handstand shot! Joining me this time is Reggie, my pretend boss on the job seen in Time to work hard(ish)!

It’s business time (hooray for travel funds)! I brushed the dust from my hair, put on mascara, through some peppermint oil on and away I went! Only 30 miles up the highway, I was clocking in to work. Nailed it!

Instead of representing Ford at the Vans Warped Tour, I’m now the proud ambassader for Chevrolet at a local baseball game! Remember the Drillers?  The team I spoke of in the post Tulsa, more than just the Drillers… I’m now working the tent inside the game for this wonderful holiday celebration! Ironic?

Welcome to the Oneok Stadium in Tulsa Oklahoma.

Our position today is inviting the guests to sign up for a chance to win 2 dugout seats with $25 Driller dollars. Just by entering they get a complimentary Chevy tote bag.

Naturally Chevy provided a few eye catching vehicles to draw the attention of the baseball fans strolling by.

You can imagine since it’s “USA’s birthday” most of the people came dressed in red, white and blue and/or some representation of the American flag.

Everybody rise for our National Anthem…

Play ball!

Here we go again with the scorching Oklahoma heat. Luckily there was quite a bit of shade offered, however if you asked any of the kids, they’d rather be dripping wet on the sunnyside!

Hungry? Sporting events have expanded their food options from the good ol’ peanuts and cotton candy days. Now, along with your typical bites, you can choose from an abundance of snacks.

Side tracked with a random shot! Your eyes see correctly… that’s a Uhaul truck rotating on top of the roof. Advertisement well done!

Time for a walk around the ballpark to see if we can gather a few more surveys and get rid of these handy bags!

Who’s this?! Only Ryan from the post Tulsa, more than just the Drillers. He’s the one who was next to me when I first heard of the ever so popular Drillers! And CJ? His adorable girlfriend you met when I made it back safely shown in 1,000 miles in 24 hours.

As night fell, you could certainly feel the energy changing. The game was coming to an end which meant fireworks were soon on the way! Check out this photo with Tulsa in the back drop.

 Show time!

As I scurried out of the stadium, this sight caught my eye. Although the photo doesn’t show them well, several families and friends gathered outside to observe the colorful sky. Good night Tulsa and Happy Birthday America!

Hot Springs or a Brewery? Both!

Im going to start right off with some fun comparison photos from past and present travels with this power group.

First photo is a picture we snapped in the sacred city of Machu Picchu. Without knowing what the others were doing, we all agreed this would make a great album cover!

Second album cover comes from Yosemite, California.

Girls will be girls… Night trek to Aguascalientes followed by volunteering in Huambutio and a night in Mammoth.

…and again in The Redwoods!

Well that was fun! Now moving on to a local brewery in Mammoth. This is the tasting room in which they eagerly share their latest creations while bragging on their oldies but goodies. If you’re a beer connoisseur or even just a fan of trying new things, this pit stop is well worth it!

Back to the outdoors as they treat us to our last night in this beautiful part of Central California. Do you see that street with hot springs and camp sites? Me neither. That’s the beauty of this hidden gem!

20130709-121130.jpg

If you know about this special place, the view will remind you of the short journey it takes to reach the hot springs.

20130709-121325.jpg

The 2ft deep pool is built of rocks and cement making it just the right size to fit a small group of people. Fed by natural hot springs in the Eastern Sierra, water is piped in and controlled by a hot water valve. This spout keeps the temperatures maintained in the low 100’s, to prevent extreme heat for anyone taking a soak. The pool also faces the Sierra Nevada’s, which makes for an incredible backdrop!

After 2 adventurous days packed with activities, we now find it perfect timing to indulge in natures little hot tub. I must say our wardrobe choices awkwardly compliment one another.

Well thank you amazing universe for this incredible sunset to compliment our midnight dip.

Dear Ann and Colin, from the moment we met, I knew this was a friendship that was far beyond a “hello” and “goodbye” in Ecuador. With Peru following and a reunion in California, I continue to keep my hopes high with another connection abroad!
Hayden, you are what some define as a “trooper”. You jumped in, buckled up and made this ride even more memorable. Thank you!

I am surrounded by quality people that I’m proud to call my friends.
