Dining and dancing the Bajan way

I couldn’t have planned better for such a wonderful lunch with a group of happy hearted locals. This family goes all out only a couple times of year and I got to join! Ryan took me the long route to his Aunties house. Here are some of the sites along the way.

I had no idea that Barbados had the second largest amount of windmills per square mile in the world (Holland being number). This is the last standing on the entire island.

We made it! (I made that sound like it was a huge trek, but you can get from one side of the island to the other in less than 45 min… Driving slowly). These were taken from the lunch table on their balcony.

Then there was the feast!
Options of meat: seasoned pork and skins, chicken and gravy, fried fish, flying fish and shrimp curry.
Average Sides: Beans, rice, salad, cooked veggies with cheese, green beans, and twice baked sweet potato.
Tradition local dishes: Macoroni pie, corn pie, bread fruit baked or in a casserole, bacon wrapped plantains and candied yams.

Sample platter? Yes please.
Photobucket Pictures, Images and Photos

Rum punch! Obviously not the bottled kind from the store in which the first ingredient is corn syrup, oh no no… This is “Aunt Pats High Octane” Rum Punch. Delicious and deceiving.

As soon as I thought I couldn’t take one more bite, they announce desert is being served. This is when you casually unsnap the top button and lean back for a stretch. Hmmm, would it be homemade cookies or maybe a pie? Turns out it was a spread that would put hometown buffet to shame! I personally like the young girls face as she eyeballs the cupcakes in front of her.

A personal thanks to Ryan and his family for the open door, pleasantly full belly and great conversation… Especially that chat about only being as old as you feel. Cheers to a youthful spirit!

Like most of the events this week, I’ve just been saying yes and going with the flow. Not really knowing what to expect leaves me with the anticipation of a kid on their first day of school combined with the excitment of a 20 year old the night before their birthday.

Tonight’s festivity is a concert. The talk around here has been as if the Michael Jackson of the Islands was coming to town.

Machel Montano is a Carribean super star that sells out crowds and keeps them going till the sun comes up. I was lucky enough to be invited to the VIP experience of this incredible performer.

The show!

Complementary drinks and food all night, so we started with the Mojito’s! As you can see, they don’t hold back on the mint.

These vibrant girls decided to give me a personal bajan dance lesson. In America they say “dancing” or in this case “grinding”. In Barbados what you may hear includes but is not limited to: Whining, wuking-up, juking, gyrating, or in a full sentence: “I guine down de road tuh pelt some waste”.

And going! I wanted to post these blurry pictures to prove the energy that is produced with the intensity of the spectators. The crowd never stops moving! Jumping, juking, singing, dancing and my favorite is the bandanas being whipped in the air. These people have redefined the word “party”.

Just the beginning of Barbados!

As you saw in the last post, I was able to experience Barbados with my mom. I’m so stoked to be back and will have much to share this round!

As I introduce you to this island of peace, parties and paradise, you’ll get to meet my amazing friends who have welcomed me to the “locals side” of life.

How we all first met was actually back in Folsom (my hometown) at the WOZ cup last year. Pause… WOZ cup? This is a tournament in which all of the best Segway Polo teams gather for a championship. Pause again… Yes, I said Segway Polo! If you want to see details of this unique sport, you can check it out at
www.segwayhtpolo.com .

I went to the tournament to visit my mom which was volunteering as a timer for the matches. As soon as I got there, she walked me to the field to meet “the coolest people here”. The team from Barbados!

Here we are last year during WOZ cup in Folsom, Ca.

I set plans to head back to the island during what they refer to as the wildest week of the year. This is the annual celebration of Crop Over which includes a variety of festivities. Those posts will be coming soon!

For a sneak peak at what I have to look forward too, check out the website at barbadoscropoverfestival.com .

Before I folded it to a wrinkly mess, I definitely had the coolest welcome sign at the airport…Thanks Ryan!

Good morning Barbados!
We combined my typical breakfast with a little Caribbean flare… Notice the fried plantains? It added a nice sweetness to the plate.

Right away I got to reunite with the entire team during one of their practices. If you look at the photo with the bus in the background, it’s actually tourist taking pictures of this world traveling team. Adorable.

Here’s my host and dear friend Ryan teaching paddle boarding at his office (poor guy). His work ethic sends him to the beach at the drop of a request from either a local improving their skills or a group of tourist looking to just try it out. His prices are right especially with his knowledge and “fun facts” about Barbados. You’ll walk away with an experience beyond a board and paddle. If you ever get the pleasure of seeing this beautiful island please give him a call for some memorable lessons!

This is “Cuz”, a food shack that sits water side and serves up one option, fish sliders. You can pick from plain, with an egg, or with egg and cheese. This little hut was actually featured on The Today’s Show in the set of “Where in the world is Matt Lauer”.

Snack time! I found a spiked green item that resembled a Cherimoya which is one of my favorite fruits from South America. Turns out it’s in the same family, but this breed is called a Guanabana, also known as a Soursop. I then opened up a starfruit and scooped some of the Greek yogurt I scored directly into it. Viola, a scrumptious treat!

I stumbled upon this gem by accident, hooray for unexpected path crossing! Meet Nicha, the owner and operator of Body Restoration .
This wonderful place is a whole food store that provides an impressive selection of organic based products ranging from skin care to snacks. I pleasantly lost track of time snooping through all of the goodies and thouroughly enjoyed the uplifting conversation with my new friend. Thanks for the info girl!

Awh… I was given a “poor boys proposal”. As children on the island they would pick these White Frangipangi flowers and bend the pedals to create a ring. A handmade gift for the girls that was given as a flirtatious gesture. I can remember the boys back home just chasing us around the playground with some sort of slimy creature. Well, I finally got my ring.

Ackee fruit is common here in Barbados, however if you ask for an Ackee in Jamaica, they’ll hand you you something completely different.
Notice that we’re in a car. That’s because people stand next to main roads and highways and wait for a buyer. You just wave them over and seconds later, fresh Ackee!

Step one – Get a bunch.
Photobucket Pictures, Images and Photos

Step 2 – Split it gently open with your teeth.
Photobucket Pictures, Images and Photos

Step 3 – Eat all of the flesh off the seed. They’re sweet with an ever so slight tang depending on how ripe. Love them!
Photobucket Pictures, Images and Photos

Fact of the day: This island is approximately 21 miles long and 15 miles wide with over 3000 hours of sunshine a year! The average daytime temperature is between 29-31degrees Celsius (that’s about 84-89 Fahrenheit).

Not just a Dolphin Tour

I like to focus on the present with a positive look forward, however just for a moment I’m going to step out the “travel blog” and tip toe through a bit of my past personal life. I feel this is necessary for you to grasp the emotional energy that surfaced during this part of my journey.

Please take note that some of the pictures and comments might “hit home” or “strike a cord” with some of you depending on your own experiences. I mean no harm… Just sharing what I view as a beautiful story.

Pamela is her name. The woman that carried me, delivered me, and raised me.
Photobucket Pictures, Images and Photos

I claim my mother to be one of my biggest fans. Most parents tell their children that “You can achieve anything you put your mind to”.
When my mom says this to me, she’s teary eyed and expresses it more like “I’m so amazed by you. You’re something special on earth and I love watching you accomplish your dreams. You’re going to impact so many people and I’m proud to be a part of it.”

Yeh, I know… What do you say back to that? I feel like “Thank you” is an understatement for the unconditional love that she has supported me with all of these years (even the moments in which she claims aliens took her sweet girl and replaced her with a teenager).

Her story went like this:
Mom in the middle of 2008: “I have an abnormal mark on my breast”.
1st nurse practitioner gives Mammogram and exam: “Looks like you’re fine.”

6 months later

Mom: “I know my body. I don’t know what’s wrong, but something isn’t right.”
Nurse practitioner orders an ultra sound: “The ultra sound shows nothing to be concerned about”. During the test, the nurse tech mentioned that mom had dense breasts and that can make it difficult to read.
Mom: “Try again, look in a different spot”.

3 months later

Mom went back and asked for a different doctor. They sent her to a female surgeon.

New Doctor: “I haven’t seen your films, but nothing is jumping out at me. Breasts can change over time and this is normal.”

2 months and and many phone calls from my mother to the doctors…

Doctor: “For all patients who think they have cancer, following everything you’ve had done, the next step is a fine needle biopsy”.

First two came back negative so they followed up with a third fine needle biopsy.

It’s now September of 2009

Me: “Mom, I trust you, but they did tests and said you’re clear. No more stress ok?”
Mom: “Not ok.”

Doctor calls to set up a PEM Scan (Positron Emission Mammography).

Test results showed cancer and encourages them to give her a PET scan and a Needle Biospy MRI.

After 2 mamagrams, 2 Ultra Sounds, 3 fine needle biopsies, a PEM scan, PET scan and an extreme amount of persistence…

Stage III Breast cancer.

Nov 23, 2009- Bi-lateral Masectomy with 22 Lymphnodes removed.
January 2010- 6 months of chemotherapy (she refused 6 weeks straight of Radiation treatment).

Obviously all that was described above included many long nights, dreadful hospital visits, tears, exhaustion, teamwork, support from friends, patience, courage and an uncountable amount of hugs.

The morning she woke up with a rainbow of hair on her pillow, she called me that day. “It’s time to take it off”. With a hesitant but courageous stride she walks into my shop and sits while I prepare the clippers. Leave it to us to have a little fun with it.

The beauty underneath it all…
Photobucket Pictures, Images and Photos
Photobucket Pictures, Images and Photos

Personally, I think she dominates the bandana look.
Photobucket Pictures, Images and Photos

Then we head in for her first treatment. Previously they inserted a device underneath her skin so that they would have a direct line site rather than peircing her arm or hand each time. This was the first time it was put to use and not the last time I held her hand through it… Literally, I didn’t miss a session.

Moms sassy side kept my faith up…
Photobucket Pictures, Images and Photos

..and her attitude kept the treatment center smiling.  Really take a look at the nurses, that’s not fake.  They loved her!
Photobucket Pictures, Images and Photos

They kept the room super cold but always had a heated blanket for us.
Photobucket Pictures, Images and Photos

During her treatment she would often say “When (not if) I make it through this, I want to be on an island.  Just give me sun and warm sand next to pretty water.”
She had no idea, but during this entire process I was planning to make it happen. So after her first “clean” test (and first haircut) we jet set to the gorgeous island of Barbados. What a vibrant place to celebrate her 50th birthday of life!
Photobucket Pictures, Images and Photos

She’s happiest near water so I set up a submarine tour.

Photobucket Pictures, Images and Photos

Before and especially since her cancer she has developed a “bucket list”. A list which includes the day that made my trip to Panama City Beach such a memorable one.
BLUE DOLPHIN TOURS is owned and operated by extremely kind people. Ted and Karen have a warm-hearted nature that is present in all conversation and a welcoming spirit that invites you in. If you are ever in this area, I can only suggest to the best of my ability to check this out. It’s an unforgettable experience!

www.bluedolphintour.com .

I could write chapters about this excursion, but I’ll keep it to the point with some fun pictures.
On this day I got to watch my mom go from a  51 year old “survivor” to a “full of life” 12 year old!
Photobucket Pictures, Images and Photos

This was our guide, Russell. He was another great addition to the day, in fact, he made the “tour” feel like a day on a boat with friends. His knowledge of the water and everything in it was impressive and comforting. Thank you Russell!

We got to make him blush.

I chose to stay in the boat to capture these moments and had no idea of the emotions that would play in my heart. To see her truly happy from within, absolutely made my heart smile.  At one point I had teared up with inexpressible joy. My mom was finally in the water with these amazing creatures, doing what she had always spoke about.

Panama City Beach

For the last two weeks, I’ve been visiting my amazing mom in Panama City Beach. This Florida coastal town is tourist friendly and certainly welcoming to anyone passing through. The people are kind as they speak with a southern accent while sporting around in flip flops (aka- slippers or thongs).
Most of my time spent here was catching up with my mom (this has been the longest we’ve ever been apart since the day I was born!) so here’s just a little snip of Panama City Beach.

This is Thomas’s Donuts. They’ve been around since 1971 and have been in several magazines as a “must do” in this city by the bay.   Considering I eat a donut once every couple of years, I thought this was a great opportunity to try a local favorite. (As if I need an excuse for a sweet treat).
Photobucket Pictures, Images and Photos

They open at 6am so mom and I thought we’d be sneaky and watch the sun come up together then walk down there to be the first ones in line!

The night before- Acting silly, plotting out our sunrise adventure.

They have quite the variety to pick from.  Along side of the usual flavors there was also custard, red velvet, sour cream, blueberry, white cream, key lime, and at least a dozen more.

Flamingo Joes is a restaurant off the beaten path that serves up a variety of coastal favorites.  From tuna wraps, bacon burgers, veggie pitas and turkey salads, the menu offers a large enough selection to please everyone.  I got the Swai fish Salad and mom ordered a classic hamburger with sweet potato French fries…. Wholesome Folsom

Folsom California, the place one would call my “hometown”. I started kindergarden here in what used to be a quaint little historical town with under 15,000 residents. Since then, I graduated, worked and started a business while watching the population rocket, reaching almost 75,000 people! Now a vibrant busy city with much to see, the following post is my week as a “tourist”.

(Most of the pictures seen on this post are from my camera, however a few were snagged from some locals and websites). Thank you!

I had my long time local friends vote for the next handstand picture to represent this adorable place and the the winner by far…
The Rainbow Bridge!
Photobucket Pictures, Images and Photos

I was stoked and ready for a quick shot of this historical landmark that was built in 1916 and still in full use today. I thought “quick”, that was until we got down there and realized that the best angle was on a flat rock IN the American River.

The fun begins! Shall we take a second to laugh at the fact that I’m in a mini skirt and sandals… Brilliant.
Photobucket Pictures, Images and Photos
Photobucket Pictures, Images and Photos

Hmmm, definitely have to get wet if this is going to be a success. Wardrobe change!
Kicked off the sandals, pulled my skirt up to make a shirt and took my shirt off to make it a scarf.

Folsom Prison, yes the one made famous in a song by the legendary Johnny Cash. For all of my friends abroad who have never heard of it, try searching for it on YouTube (Johnny cash – Folsom Prison Blues) it’s a classic!  If you live near, in or around this area and were born before 1994 and don’t know this song… please report yourself to the local authorities for breaking some sort of unspoken law.

As Folsom expanded, the rainbow bridge was no longer sufficient for all of the growth.
Here is the “new bridge” that has opened up traffic flow to cross the American River.

You’re looking at the massive Folsom Dam that was closed in 2003 for security issues following the September terrorist attacks of 2001. The solid bridge in front of it is the the new crossing that opened in 2009.

This town has grown to a city with 10 elementary schools, 2 middle schools, 3 high schools and a community college. I found this pic on line and due to my lack of a helicopter, I thought I’d use it. This is the high school I graduated from, scene from birds eye view.

Folsom lake
Photobucket Pictures, Images and Photos

Although Folsom doesn’t have your typical city scene night clubs, it certaintly does it’s job of  providing a variety of places to enjoy adult beverages, live music and billards.  Depending on the evening, you can also find a Dj spinning to a dance floor of people usually involving a group celebrating a birthday, engagement, or simple girls night out (which typically brings the “boys night out”… Funny how that works).

To prevent a bunch of dark photos of the back of people’s heads, I went out during the day and snapped some pics of the local bars.

“The Purp” as some call it, is a restaurant and bar combo providing some of the best Bloody Mary’s around, a menu full of classic dishes and daily entertainment ranging from televised sports to dancing and live music.
This is one of my favorites for the kickstart of the well known “Sunday Funday”.
Locals Definition of “Sunday Funday”: An extension of the party weekend usually beginning early with “the hair of the dog” and followed by some activity in the sun with your peers. Usually ending… sunburnt.

If you arrive here on a Sunday morning, you’ll find some girls in a mini dress with makeup (probably from the events of the previous night) to ladies in jeans and flip flops. Guys in hats ready for the lake sitting next to a table of elderly gentleman dressed from earlier church services. I always get a kick out of the bikers that ride in on their motorcycles in full leather gear.

Folsom Lake Bowl, otherwise known as FLB.
When I was little, my dad used to take me here every week during his bowling league. I would get my little ball and mess around on a lane while emptying the .10 cent gum ball machine.  Now it’s a full bar, casino, bowling alley, with an attached uniquely styled barber shop. This is the central “go to” if you’re looking for people, food, drinks, billiards, music, gambling and/or sports. The indoor and outdoor areas are comfortable for crowds and they have TV screens that are always showing the latest sporting events.

Lucky’s Barber Shop! There’s something to be said about people who can appreciate art… if it be hanging on the walls, tattooed on the skin, or designed in the hair. Good on ya fellas!
Photobucket Pictures, Images and Photos
Photobucket Pictures, Images and Photos

Other options to choose from range quite a bit depending on your budget and what you desire for the evening. Quick run down on my favorites:

Streets of London: A British pub serving up authentic dishes and great drinks in a fútbol decorated bar. They also have picnic tables outside with a comfortable, welcoming vibe and fair prices.

Samuel Horne’s: A narrow room with creative seating that specializes in local brews.  Their wall of beer changes perodically giving you a variety of tastes with the added lesson of where it came from and it’s distinct flavors.  It also has a chef on hand that makes fabulous bites to compliment the cold beers.
Photobucket Pictures, Images and Photos

…and it happens to provide the stage for a weekly acoustical set by a well known local friend, Scott Graham.  You’ve heard of him? Thought so.
Photobucket Pictures, Images and Photos

The list goes on! Sports Garage, Wine Bar, Manderas, the entire strip on Sutter street including the Hotel, Scarletts, Powerhouse, Sutter club, old Europe, and more!

Instead of me listing the other dozens of fun places, just email me if you want more info.  There’s honestly so many that this post will start to take a turn to a “best route to pub crawl in Folsom”.

I grew up in this city, back when it was nicked named “The Cow Town”. A time when everyone knew the owner of each local business and you graduated high school with the same kids you learned your ABC’s with.
Although I’ve packed up and moved out to see more of this beautiful planet, it’s always so nice to come back and be reminded of where I came from.

A sincere thank you to all of my friends that welcomed me with the brightest smiles and cheerful eyes! The love was felt beyond the hugs. If time didn’t allow us to connect, I still absorbed the warmth from the emails, voicemails and even the honking and waving from cars passing!

…cheers till next time Folsom.

4th of July in the USA!

Independence Day is the national holiday of the United States of America commemorating the signing of the Declaration of Independence by the Continental Congress on July 4, 1776, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
(I didn’t write that… Thank you Internet).

*Fun fact #1 – The US flag changed appearance for 280 years as each state was added to the union, another star was added. The last star was added on July 4th, 1960, after Hawaii became the 50th state.
Photobucket Pictures, Images and Photos
The 13 stripes (seven red and six white) are for the original 13 colonies and the 50 stars represent all the states. Red is for Valor and Hardiness; white is for Innocence and Purity; and blue is for Vigilance, Perseverance and Justice.

North Americans celebrate in several different ways usually including, but not limited to a parade, food mostly prepared on a barbecue, adult beverages and fireworks (liquor and fireworks… kind of silly when I actually write it out).
*Fun fact #2 – more than 66 million Americans bust out the grill on this national holiday.

Here are some photos snagged from the local parade that was kicking off the famous Folsom Pro Rodeo.  For details about this event click here . It’s actually really cute!
*Fun fact #3 – 50 long horn cattle lead this parade followed by half dozen “scoopers” to clean up the cow droppings.

There’s a fun run in which locals dress up in costume and jog with the parade. I thought these guys were adorable.

For years I have been lucky enough to the get “the invite” from a great family that choose to spend their 4th on a house boat! This year there was a range of ages which in my opinion brings a wonderful balance to the festivities.

Merriam Webster definition: Houseboat
a boat fitted for use as a dwelling; especially : a pleasure craft with a broad beam, a usually shallow draft, and a large superstructure resembling a house.

We celebrated on Lake Oroville. This body of water sits in central California outside of the popular college town of Chico.
*Fun fact #3 – Chico State was nicknamed the “party school” in 1987 by playboy magazine.

At the doc you get to see a variety of other boats.

Although there’s a bathroom with a shower (as well as a kitchen, dining area and bedroom) it’s so much more fun to bath like this:

Quick quiz: There are four girls in this pic. One is Portuguese and German. Another is Irish, English and German. One is Irish and French and the other is Native American, Italian, French and German.

Answer: Crystal the Portuguese/German is at the top and Stephanie the Irish/English/German is to the right. Kelsey is the French/Irish on the left and I’m the bottom set of legs as the remaining mix.

Safety first! We took pride in our vibrant jackets (that were all youth sizes which makes for a well…. Snug fit).

Side note: We took the boat up towards the some waterfalls which means this water is not “lake warm”. It certainly brings appreciation to the incredible set of lungs we’re so fortunate to have!

What happens in Vegas…

“What happens in Vegas, stays in Vegas”….for about 18 seconds until it’s shared on Facebook.

This post took awhile for me to complete due to the mixed emotions I have in regards to the intensity of this place on our amazing planet called Earth.
If you’ve been following me for even a portion of the time, you’ve hopefully been able to feel my growth in areas like appreciating what I have, not wasting food, honoring my body and respecting others.

“Toot toot!” (That’s me blowing my own horn. Just thought I’d prepare you for it).

I believe in balance. I feel fabulous with healthy eating, but will rarely pass up a frozen yogurt or sweet potato french fry. Sleep is necesary for humans, but I’ve absolutly danced till the sun came up (ironically usually in Vegas). Although I choose water as my drink of choice, I can also enjoy a good beer or mojito (which I’m sure must have a vitamin or two in it, right?). If I choose to eat out, I’d rather split a meal so there’s no waste or over eating. I use electricity, but turn off unnecessary lights to save energy and I love creative fashion, but don’t feel the need to spend an abundunce of money “shopping”.

Well, Vegas doesn’t necessarily promote such things and this was a bigger challenge for me than I expected.

Other wise known as “Sin City”, this is a place where they say “anything goes”. As long as you’re 21 years of age or in some cases 19 with your cousins ID (which I am not condoning) you can arrive in this wild destination and play 24 hours a day. Gambling, pool parties, fancy drinks, dance clubs, entertainment with some of the top Dj’s in the world, famous chefs and many other almost unimaginable things.

This location will welcome you with high energy, remove your ability to sleep, take your voice, and politely kick you out while asking you to stay. That sentence only makes sense if you’ve been there… With me.

So why did I choose to go back this year? A different experience.

I am lucky enough to have incredible friends that live there. Yes, they actually have a real house with a front door, a dog and a back yard! They go to work and cook… In their own kitchen!
All jokes aside, this couple is one that I admire for their sincere care for one another. They respect themselves and appreciate what they have as a power duo. Inside and out they exude a beauty that should be described as welcoming, open minded and exceptional.
*Please see picture below to confirm the glow that radiats from Sabrina and Mark.

This my buddy Rob, an all around gentleman. You can find him either working hard or playing hard… smiling, opening doors, and always making you feel like a queen for the day. Thank you again friend for another memorable day in Vegas!
Photobucket Pictures, Images and Photos

I believe there are bigger reasons for things to fall into place, especially when it wasn’t planned or expected. This happens to all of us, I just think some are more aware of it than others.
While sitting poolside with Rob, we start chatting with two friendly fellas that had complimented my tattoo. Before I knew it, traveling was brought up and viola… New friends!

The “responsible one” holding the folders, actually working on this gorgeous day while enjoying a cold drink (my kind of pal) is Kit. He has the vibe of the “coolest dude” ever… Old enough to have done it and young enough to do it again.
The happy guy directly to my left (third one in) is Marshall. Turns out neither one of us could of predicted the friendship that this poolside meeting would entail. Our new connection should be described as extremely entertaining, awkward, and the most comfortable that a “Vegas” introduction could bring. High five to you Marshall!

I’m not much of a gambler, so I only have one shot of the inside of a casino. If you desire more pics, it’s very easy to find on the Internet. Just search “pics of people emotionally confused at the site of their wallet magically decreasing in size”.

I respect the technology… This thing must have the power to from go zero to 100mph in a few seconds.

The sun goes down, the vibe gets louder and we walk the strip again.

This was one of our unexpected stops. It started out as a cover band performing to an empty dance floor surrounded by tables of people starring into space as if they didn’t know what to do… Then enters Erika and Marshall! We start the dance party and before we knew it, it was a crowded floor and a lively band! The first pic is me shaking it with a man that used to be a professional dancer until he was paralyzed. They said he’d never walk again… They didn’t say anything about not dancing again!

This tunnel that had a moving walk-way with rotating colors! Let’s pause for a minute… It’s a power belt that carries you for several hundred feet so that you don’t have to walk yourself… Hmmm, this is one of those things that makes me wonder about our future.

Vegas is well known for look a likes wandering the city and many shows duplicating famous stars from the past. I ran into Elvis.

Perfect for a Vegas handstand!
Photobucket Pictures, Images and Photos

As you can see, it’s a very entertaining destination that can easily draw you into a world that almost hypnotizes the brain and body. It would be silly for me to say that I don’t enjoy my time here, because I do. However, when I step back and look at the reality of the energy and money spent to keep Vegas going, makes me wonder where else we could put that kind of force… And if we did, what a difference it would make.

*please note some of these pictures were taken from a phone so please ignore the blur. Also, if you really want to see the magnitude of Las Vegas, I highly suggest searching photos online!

Water fun In NorCal

As I travel abroad people always ask “Do you ever get home sick?” or “What do you miss the most?”. Although the lakes are beautiful, the rivers are fun and the sushi is top notch… it’s the faces and laughter of my incredible friends that tug at my hometown strings.
A HUGE thanks to all of the super heroes that have always provided unconditional encouragement. The support I was shown when deciding to depart was felt beyond words. This includes but is not limited to friends, family, clients, gymnasts, staff at 24 hour, my dentist, the local grocery store clerks and the beautifully energized woman from Elliot’s Natural Foods!

I plan on posting a bit more about California before I go, but for now here are some quick pics showing some fun in the sun. We’re so lucky to have this all in our backyard!

Lake Tahoe is a well known city that has it all. Biking, hiking, snowboarding, skiing, gambling, shopping, ice-skating, swimming, golfing, disc golfing, gondola rides, snow mobiling, boating (pause here for another breath) live music, festivals, famous events, scrumptious restaurants, themed hotels, traditional cabins and… oh ya there’s a lake… A big one! If you want a scenic drive, take the 72 mile road that circles this beautiful body of water.

I snagged a couple of pictures off of the Internet to give you an idea of this breath taking place. If there was a way I could get you to smell the air here, you would experience the perfect combination of crisp pine and fresh water over rocks.

As I look back at the month spent with my family, I’m proud to say that I truly enjoy the precious moments with this quirky group of loving people. Of course family time is personal, but here’s a small snip of last month.

Ohhklahoma!

Hello again! After my last post, I put the blog away as I flew back to the states for some quality family time. First stop… Oklahoma!

Although I was raised in California, I’ve been coming back here for years so it’s very familiar to me. To the several people who have never seen this place and for all of my amazing friends abroad (who haven’t taken the time to research “middle America”), here is a quick look at the country life in Oklahoma.

This is looking at the main street of central Agra. When I say “main” or “central”, I mean the only road in town that has THE school, THE gas station, THE post office and THE cafe.
Photobucket Pictures, Images and Photos

These were all taken from the road traveling in-between Agra to the next “big city” called Stillwater.

Almost to Stillwater and we’ve got some neighborly competition!
Photobucket Pictures, Images and Photos

Okie (pronounced Oh-Kee) – A native or inhabitant of Oklahoma. The term Okie is usually used in slang describing an uncivilized person, a redneck, or a person from Oklahoma. Usually used in the negative.
Photobucket Pictures, Images and Photos

Sonic is one of the top selling fast food joints around here. It still uses the old fashion style of parking at an open spot in front of the restaurant and waiting for the waitress to come out to you. Some of them still wear roller skates!
Photobucket Pictures, Images and Photos

Main street of Stillwater. Adorable!

Funny sights I thought I’d share.

I found these at the local gym… Only in Oklahoma.

Really? Yep… In a local garage.
Photobucket Pictures, Images and Photos

Ill have one more Oklahoma post before I depart for my hometown of Folsom California!
