Friday Fitness #11 – The Dirty dozen and Clean 15!

Every year, a list of the “Dirty Dozen,” are announced to the public. This consists of the top (or bottom rather) 12 fruits and vegetables that have the highest amount of pesticides when grown conventionally versus organically. When testing, the Environmental Working Group uses 40,900 samples for 47 different produce.

So if you’re not going to eat 100% organic, at least make these in your organic choices!

The Dirty Dozen!

  1. Strawberries

  2. Spinach

  3. Kale

  4. Nectarines

  5. Apples

  6. Grapes

  7. Peaches

  8. Cherries

  9. Pears

  10. Tomatoes

  11. Celery

  12. Potatoes

The EWG also grants us a list of the 15 fruits and vegetables that test with the lowest amount of pesticide residue.

So if you’re limited in organic selection, these ones can slide by as being safer to consume.

So fresh and so clean clean (for all of you OutKast fans)!

  1. Avocados

  2. Sweet corn

  3. Pineapple

  4. Frozen sweet peas

  5. Onions

  6. Papaya

  7. Eggplant

  8. Asparagus

  9. Kiwi

  10. Cabbage

  11. Cauliflower

  12. Cantaloupe

  13. Broccoli

  14. Mushrooms

    Honeydew melon

Hopefully this knowledge gives you a little more confidence when standing in the store debating on your selection. Depending on my options, I’ve often considered these lists when making my decision at the market. For example, I’d go for a non organic pineapple over non organic strawberries any day! In fact, I’d confess to grabbing a side of cabbage over the popular spinach or kale salad if a restaurant couldn’t confirm organic or not.

Side note for thought: I wonder if we’d make the same food choices if we saw the entire process…

Kelly’s Kloset

Kelly’s Kloset is a personal shopping experience that allows you to browse international clothing and jewelry lines without the hassle of crowded fitting rooms or cluttered racks. I love this concept! To expose her newest line from Bali, she held a fashion show in which I was honored to be the hairstylist. The venue was located in St.James Barbados at The Cliff, an open air lounge with multi-level seating that over looks stunning turquoise waters. The ambiance is inviting with a colorful decor and unique design that leaves you with somewhat of an international feel.
And for the view? Well, take a look!

What you can’t see from your table is all of us preparing for the show. Vibrant girls, beautiful women and my hands in an abundance of hair. Here’s a glimpse of behind the scenes.

Once the show began, the crowd was properly entertained by a local DJ as they sipped their rosé and enjoyed the fresh west coast breeze.

This was such a success that she followed it up with another presentation a few weeks later. I was invited back for another round of curls and hairspray except this time, I was asked to be in the show as well. Say what!? Well, why not…. Right? A new experience outside my comfort zone to add to the list of “Never thought I’d be doing that!”. Bring it on.

Ladies, if you’re interested in any of the designs seen, please check out her page here and take a look around! There’s also good ol’ Instagram @ kellyskloset246.  Local girls, she has multiple locations on the island in which require a scheduled visit… It’s as easy as a phone call! 246-234-9039

Kelly, thanks for the opportunity and experience working with you and your passion. It’s clear to me that you live a life full of light, color and joy… Looking forward to the next round!

Wait, it’s not Halloween yet… Is it?

After a day of exploring the Shrine we decided to keep the energy going and visit the popular Takeshita Street that leads to the crossing of Harajuku Street. For all of my California friends, think of it as the “Haight and Ashbury” of Tokyo if you will. This energetic strip has it all! Unique gift shops, local eats, costume boutiques, candy buffets and lets not leave out the 90’s themed collectors store!

Ill start off fresh with a picture that I snagged for all of my “car loving” buddies. This beauty caught my eye simply because you don’t see things like this very often while “backpacking” around.

It’s not Halloween, however year round you’ll find girls dressed in eccentric costumes just out doing their thing and always willing for a photo.

There’s definitely no question if we’re here as we approach the main entrance to Takeshita Street. Time to kick it up a notch!

Let us take a photo tour, walk with me!

You know, my backpack does have quite a bit of wear and tear. Maybe it’s time for a new one?

Sweet tooth anyone? Fruit on a stick or crepes and ice-cream!

Fruit not good enough to subside your sugar craving? How about a candy shop! A few things to be looked for in this set of pictures:
#1 The adorable host outside that is passing out free candy.
#2 The size of Jessica’s marshmallow and the gummy worm (I mean snake!) that Brandon found.
#3 The girl dressed in all black needs to be added to the list of crazy attire you’ll see around here.

20131018-071814.jpg

I skipped out on the candy store so I could snag a Japanese single serving dish. This little bowl had root veggies, soybeans, green squiggly things and dark brown circular objects. All glazed with what tasted like a ginger teriyaki sauce and it even came with chop sticks! Is it just me, or am I starting to take on a Japanese appearance?

20131018-071955.jpg

With the sun down and a walk behind us we slowly made our way back towards the station.

Street food! Octopus and squid balls that consist of fish, egg, spices and flour pressed into a circle before being deep fried and served.

20131018-074144.jpg

Although I love a tasty Kabob once in awhile, I had plenty of those in Europe…

20131018-074255.jpg

Wait! I can read a part of that menu and I see, “healthy… green…” and “…exotic”!

Salad coming up!

20131018-074656.jpg

Too bad we already ate, this place looked inviting with several tempting combinations. I would have went with the fig, kiwi and yogurt mixture.

20131018-074932.jpg

As we exit the main strip, the modern city buildings hypnotize you with their crazy structures and mind teasing appearances. The first one is actually formed with a series of angled mirrors!

20131018-075035.jpg

20131018-081305.jpg

A deep breath (of city air) is necessary to take it all in. It’s reminds me of Time Square in New York City, except nobody is yelling and there’s not a slice of pizza around every corner.

Markets, street food and exploring (eating) the unknown!

Shoes on, empty tummy and friends to join! Open your eyes and let us welcome you to the streets of Cusco!

One hard boiled egg next to a baked potato topped with a green chile sauce… Yes please!

Our curiosity finally got to us after passing by this bucket mounted with what looked like a pile of compost. Turns out, they pour water over the goodies and let is seep through to create a tea. We each tried a sip from the warm recycled water bottle that it came in… none of us fought for the last drink.

This was simply a barrel of baked potatoes. You could a decent bag, warm and ready for less than $0.15.

This little surprise treat was warm white rice mixed with sweet milk, layered with a mild fruit jelly like substance, all topped off with a saltine cracker.

20130509-121334.jpg

On the way back we skimmed some of the non edible items that offered up hammocks, sweaters, jewelry, wallets, dishes, tattoos, and more.

20130509-122400.jpg

Ann and I decided that instead of getting matching tattoos (enter sarcastic laugh here), that we would go with Peruvian friendship bracelets.

Sometimes it’s necessary to stop and remind yourself of where you are. We were all just chatting away before we glanced over at this beauty. Handstand time!
