Arkie to Okie….Crossing state lines

Leaving California usually provides mixed emotions. Saying goodbye to my hometown and childhood friends weighs heavy on the comfort seeking part of my spirit, yet knowing a new environment is in my near future brings a unique excitement that is irreplaceable. I’m not sure if it’s a hindering or useful quality of mine, but being in my “comfort zone” is generally short and sweet before I crave a different surrounding to stimulate my senses. I suppose there’s no need to label it “good” or “bad”… It just is.

To my memory, I haven’t posted these fun photos of the inside of the Sacramento airport. It’s so familiar to me that I forget my international friends have never experienced it. Check out the creative artwork at the baggage claim. I think it’s brilliant!

Next stop is the land of fried okra, snappin turtles (nobody pronounces the “g” in “snapping”) and red dirt. Before we land, lets pause for a short story.

Southwest Airlines doesn’t assign seats, rather gives you a general boarding order that allows you to pick any open seat. This means, for travelers like me that don’t take concern in an early check in, get stuck loading a plane like a ten year old on a bus for the first day of school. All the cool kids with their window views, the runners up in the aisle chairs and the rest of us debating on the middle seat between the mom with toddlers or the business man who clearly uses the flight to recreate his work desk and take over the entire space with every tech gadget that they allow on board. My pick today was to squeeze front and center with an older man built like the traditional Santa Claus and a younger fit guy with legs the size of my waist.

Great news to me, Mr. Bulging-biceps was a friendly talker who was extremely intelligent and eager to trade stories. I could make this entire post about the conversation between the two of us, but instead I’ll just give you a photo with confidence that this gentleman crossed my path for a purpose. Thank you for the new workouts, encouraging words and a few well needed giggles.

I landed in Arkansas to visit my cousin Lana for a week before heading to Oklahoma. Road trip! Her and the family loaded up as we set off for our 5 hour journey.

This little pit stop has a flavored sugar disposing machine. Yes, you imagine correctly. It’s a huge colorful attraction in which you pick your choice of dyed sugar to weigh in and eat up. I rarely post strong negative opinions, but really folks… Can we at least pretend to care about the nutritional needs of our children?

The famous Route 66 guides us in to the final stretch before finally arriving to the small town (by small town, I mean a street the has some houses surrounding the gas station-grocery store-post office that sits across the hwy from the only school k-12th. All shown in detail here).

When it rains, it freezes!

Whenever I return to Oklahoma to spend time with my family, I get greeted with an abundance of love and the type of warm comfort that’s needed in this weather! During my 3 week stay, we experienced sunshine, rain, sleet, snow, freezing rain and two earthquakes. Let us not forget my last visit that was accompanied by tornado’s. (And my family worries about me when I’m abroad?)

Things to do with the snow:

Play in it!

20131230-195745.jpg

Eat it! Most of you are aware that frozen sweets are my favorite treats. So, when it snows…. my dessert is literally falling from the sky!

Step one: Gather clean snow. This usually excludes the first snow due to toxins collected in the air or any yellow snow that a creature may have used for relief. I would also confirm with your grandma in which direction she sweeps the carport off to prevent questionable objects in your collection. (I may or may not be speaking from experience).

Step two: Find your options for liquid, sweetener and flavoring. Traditionally it’s milk, vanilla and sugar but of course we’ve expanded over the years.

20131230-204827.jpg

Step three: Narrow down your choices and combine. Then slowly add the snow until you reach your preferred texture. Enjoy!

20131230-211020.jpg

20131230-211032.jpg

What happens when the snow melts? You discover a lawn of leaves that should be picked up before Spring. Why not turn it into a little fun team work?

Just when you think the sun has made a comeback, the weather report warns you of freezing rain headed your way!

*Freezing rain is precipitation that falls in liquid form as raindrops and immediately freezes as it contacts most any surface.

Due to the weight of the ice, it tends to snap tree limbs and cause lines to collapse and loose power. Although it can create beautiful images, it’s known in the mid-west as one of the most extreme weather hazards. When the wires go down, it can effect anything to do with power. This means possibly your fridge, lights, appliances, computer and so on. Gorgeous, but not helpful!

The first photo below looks like snow, but it’s all ice!

We get our water from a well… Not today!

20131231-080722.jpg

My brothers had to smash the ice off of their bikes in order for the chains to act properly. This definitely is a problem we never had to deal with growing up in California.

Speaking of family, I’d like to introduce two of my biggest fans that are welcoming newborns into this grand planet of ours. Lacie and Lana are due to deliver weeks apart, I’m so excited!

20131231-085549.jpg

UPDATE: Lana delivered a peaceful little girl on December 26th. Welcome sweet Kasiah Rane! (Side note, the cheerful woman in the collage has been following this blog since day one. Thank you Judy for your consistent support!)

20131231-085804.jpg

Lacie, I feel your positive support thousands of miles away… Always. Thank you love!

If I were to highlight every family member, the post would go on for pages knowing the incredible people that I’m lucky enough to be related to! If you’re actually interested in more details, please feel free to search “family” or “Oklahoma”.

I’ll wrap this one up with a collage of my 5 siblings. Joseph, Benjamin, Hannah, Sarah and Rachel with thoughts of Elizabeth. Miss you kids already!

He called me Mabeline

Where have you been?! Ok, I’ve been surviving tornados in Oklahoma (see the last post to experience that event) while enjoying time with my dads family. Usually I write about the lifestyle around here and some of the latest happenings but during this visit, my focus was quickly detoured due to the passing of my grandfather. I’m so thankful that I was able to be here with my loved ones for this unexpected turn of events.

Papaw (pronounced “Pa-Paw”) proved that a handsome man can sport a flat top and make it look good!

20130616-171442.jpg

Favorite fun fact: He gave all 14 of his grandchildren personal nicknames that are still used today.
He called me Mabeline (pronounced Mae-buh-leen).

Papaw was in the secondary stages of Alzheimer’s, so I valued our light conversations over his Hot Rod magazines and was honored when I got to give him his last haircut. I giggled when he requested “Make me look like the cool kid in school”, as this was typical humor coming from him.

20130616-180126.jpg

Recently he said something that has really held strong in my mind, (possibly because he rarely said things like this or maybe it was the clarity in his eyes) either way, it has stuck with me…

“Ya know Mabes (short for Mabeline), living life without happiness is a death wish”.

He passed away one week later.

20130616-194523.jpg

This post isn’t meant for any other reason than exactly how you personally take it. Could this be a reminder of a loved one that you’ve lost? Maybe it’s a refreshing reality check to appreciate those who are still around. Possibly its just a small thought that enters your life for a moment, then leaves as soon as you click away.

Whatever it is to you… it came with love from me.

A walk through Tornado Alley

“If you don’t like the weather in Oklahoma… just wait five minutes.” This is a commonly used phrase describing the extreme changes that can happen within a moments time. I’m here at the end of Spring which means the rain is finishing up and the sun brings on the heat. Combine those two things and you have a humid day that often leaves you feeling sticky and constantly thirsty. This year, another element has shown it’s face earlier than usual and that little monster is called tornado season.

It’s usually the thunder that wakes you up. Sharp cracking is the first sound that alarms your peaceful rest followed by the roll of deep thunder. With the windows rattling and your heart pounding, sleep is now something of the past. As you attempt to drift off, the continuous lightening keeps your room looking like there’s paparazzi outside with dozens of cameras constantly snapping photos. I’m actually writing this post with the sound of the storm as my music and the constant light flicker as a reminder that it’s still dark outside.

With that said, let me take you on a tour of an Oklahoma Spring day. Ours starts as a bright event, with clear skies and happy children chasing butterflies as we gather in my families yard.

My dad is currently building a studio in his backyard for my grandfather who needs assisted living. This perfect sized guest house will also be a great future hide out for my siblings as they grow up and “need space”. I’m not sure if you could pay me enough to go back to those teenage years! Either way, this project has turned into a family effort due to my talented father severely injuring his dominate arm. With cousins, kids and friends… let the construction continue!

What you can’t see here, is the intensity building as we raced against the wind to finish what was necessary. Tornado warnings had been rumoring the town all day!

With our powers combined, the days work is wrapped up just in time to hear the first city alarm sound. It’s informing us that with the next siren, you must promptly take shelter. Here are the clouds bubbling up on the way back to my grandmas house.

20130604-231343.jpg

20130605-181045.jpg

My cousin Kaleb captured a few photos on his way home as well. He lives in the other direction and was heading towards the lightening! Notice in the first picture, he’s actually following the storm trackers from the news station.

20130604-231736.jpg

20130604-231751.jpg

20130604-231803.jpg

As Kaleb gained ground, this was his final photo before putting the camera down and thankfully making it safely to his wife and daughter.

20130604-232941.jpg

As the darkness followed him, the clearing left us with birds singing in the light of a rainbow. This was definitely an unexpected sight after going through such aggressive weather.

20130605-070225.jpg

To give you an idea of just how separated the sky can be, I took this panoramic as the circulation was beginning. It was like watching day turn to night in seconds.

20130604-232003.jpg

Attempting to sleep, a few more violent knocks at the window, tells me that the sky is still dancing and the threat isn’t over. A big day, a longer night and finally the sun welcomes a new start.

The morning arrives with blue sky and a few tree limbs scattered around the damp ground as the only evidence of the vicious night prior. This brings a heart of gratitude and numerous phone calls to check up on loved ones around. I’m thankful to say that my volunteer work for the Oklahoma tornados will not be done in the town of my family… others aren’t so fortunate.

To end this post on a cheerful note, I’ll return to the common phrase, “If you don’t like the weather in Oklahoma, just wait five minutes”. Here’s a recap of the 48 hours that followed the tree snapping, life threatening, heart pounding chaos.

The sun is out, the twisters are gone so now it’s time to play!

Working up a sweat!

Farewell Santa Catalina, I’ve been adopted!

My final days at Cabanas Time Out leave me feeling sad to depart from my new friends but eager to explore other parts of Panama. I get asked often of “how” I decide where to go next or just how far do I plan ahead. My response varies quite a bit depending on the situation. With major flights or extended volunteer programs, I plan ahead. With small city transfers or hostel hopping, I usually find myself making the decision on the way to the bus stop. This week, I got a call during my stay in Santa Catalina. I repeat… I got a phone call! Imagine the look on my face when the reception says, “It’s for you”!

On the other end of the line was a kind woman with a gentle voice that said something to the affect of, “You don’t know me, but my good friend Debbie knows your mother in Florida and we heard that you were injured from a fall”. (This is true and not my brightest moment). “We live in Panama City and are here for you if you need anything like a place to recover or a ride to the airport”… Well hello there unexpected sweet angel!

This my friends, is how the next “plan” was made. I cut my time short in Santa Catalina and found out my new friends from the hotel were also heading to the city. So, off we go together as I get excited to meet my new Panamanian family!

Upon arrival I was welcomed by a family that made me feel like I was the long lost sister, or some sort of guest celebrity. A neat feeling compared to the usual “one more backpacker” greeting that comes complimentary with each hostel. I don’t have a photo of the entire family so I snuck this adorable holiday picture to give you a visual of my hero’s.

With time for some arts and crafts and a warm dinner, the girls and I connect before

As the lovely ladies are off in school, I get the pleasure of joining Lia (mom) to the fresh local market. My favorite!

The rules for this maze of fresh fruit and veggies:
#1. Pay $0.25 to enter.
#2. Enter at your own risk.

What stood out to me about this street market is that it’s a drive, park and pay. You literally drive around (in any direction) and when you see something you want, you park (anywhere you want) pick and pay for your goods, then get back into your car and keep going.

Another pit stop in Oklahaoma

After a short stretch back to Sacramento and a quicker stop in Arizona, I decided to spoil myself with another visit to Oklahoma! Now when I say “spoil”, I’m not talking about the good ol’ dry brown scenery or the flat roads with limited landscapes. I’m purely speaking of connecting with my precious family that I’m extremely grateful for.

I’m going to dedicate this one to my Aunt’s (my father’s sisters) and their mom who I call Grams.

Ill start with Aunt Tonya. Through example, she has been one of my greatest teachers. With her nurturing character she would (and did) give to others when she was the one in need. She was a natural at comforting the unsettled and there was never any doubt that her intensions were driven from pure love. I’m confident to believe that Aunt Tonya is missed and thought of often by those who were blessed to have known her.

Things I would be honored to say that I inherited from my Aunt Tonya: The ability to truly embrace joy, inner strength, and the adorable “shoulder bounce” that happens once the giggles kick in.
This photo is the two of us about 25 years ago. Her eyes say it all…

20130222-162237.jpg

I’ve been told that my style mostly resembles Aunt Cindee. The family says, “When she was your age…” she carried herself with a natural bohemian vibe and a hippie flare. With a contagious laugh and quick mind, you can imagine the hours I enjoy bonding with her. I think if we grew up together, we would of made fantastic college roommates!

Things I inherited from Aunt Cindee: Love for homemade soup, a gypsy heart and her sense of humor (that’s based on exaggerated visuals and usually leads to a dramatic description that goes way too far… all resulting in involuntary distorted facial expressions).

After raising two children, she now designates most of her time to her energetic (to say the least) grandson and her job at Cushing Valley Hope. This is a drug rehab center in a stately mansion that provides residential, day or partial care, medically monitored alcohol detox, family and continuing care services. Also, the location for my handstand pic of the day!

20130222-165032.jpg

Oh Aunt Heidi, Aunt Heidi, Aunt Heidi…. What will we ever do with her? She has a blunt direction when sharing her opinion and an effortless way to make you laugh. Being around her gives you a youthful sense of life (she didn’t pay me to say that). While raising her teenage daughter, she still maintains sanity and invites me for countless hours of laughter and reminiscing.

Things I inherited from Aunt Heidi: The nickname “Shug”, love for high energy socializing and her “guns” (aka arms). Also when I sarcastically laugh, my mom says “that was SO your Aunt Heidi!”

Grams, the woman that raised these 3 lovely ladies along with my dad (she must have super powers) plays a special roll in my life. Without too much said, she is simply one of my best friends. I can tell her anything, she gets my humor and most of all, she has shown me unconditional love through all the stages of my life.
Things I believe that I inherited from my irreplaceable Grandma: The love for good food, the eyes she gave my father, occasional necessary stubbornness and the ability to finish a soft serve cone quicker than you can start one.

The reason there are no photos of the girls described above is because they have mastered the art of “picture dodging”… Something I clearly didn’t inherit from them!

Need an idea for a creative gift? I took this photo of my family and made it into a puzzle for Grams. Love it!

Now off to the airport on a snowy day in Oklahoma. Next stop? It’s a surprise.

20130223-085511.jpg

They even had to “de-ice” the plane before take off.
