Let freedom ring… from within.

Today is July 4th, a federal holiday recognized in the United States of America. In 1776 the original 13 colonies declared their independence from England and was officially observed as a new nation… “Republic for which it stands, one Nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all.”

Definition of Independence:

1. the time when a country or region gains political freedom from outside control

2. freedom from outside control or support : the state of being independent

Definition of Freedom

1. the state of being free or at liberty rather than in confinement or under physical restraint

2. the absence of necessity, coercion, or constraint in choice or action

My dictionary of thoughts at the moment:

If you are truly independent and living with freedom, I believe you’ve given yourself permission to enjoy life in such a manner…

  • Independent from others emotional demands.
  • Independent from the programmed way of thinking.
  • Independent of expectations.
  • Independent from inner negative torment.
  • Independent of the need for outward fulfillment.
  • Freedom to live without self induced struggles.
  • Freedom to breathe without the weight of unnecessary stress.
  • Freedom to be exactly who you are without fear of judgement.
  • Freedom to live not only through experiences but beyond your dreams.
  • Freedom to love. Deeply. Truly. Without holding anything back.

No matter what Independence Day means to you (disregarding your countries standards, your families traditions and your friends thoughts), I truly wish you a sense of freedom that ignites a fire within to extend beyond limitations that you may not even know you have.

New found higher love

I recently visited tornado alley known as Oklahoma with what seemed to be… well, a tornado of a trip. The whirlwind flew by with a few false storm alarms and some quality time with the family. For the sake of me looking back on this blog someday, I’m going to post a couple pics of my amazing siblings to remind myself of the beautiful growth they’ve shown. For those of you who have been following for sometime, you may rememeber these little guys from years past.
And now… These kids have continued to brighten my life beyond expectations.

In order from left to right is Hannah, Joseph, Sarah, Rachel and to the right of me Ben. We will also always keep loving memory of little Elizabeth.

A refreshing thought crossed my mind the other day that has filled my heart with all that mooshy stuff and provided some unexpected new feelings. As we all know, I’m not a mother. Yes, I’ve been an “adult female figure” or “role model” when teaching youth sports, working in schools and volunteering in orphanages but to date, I have never adopted or given birth. With all that said, the love I feel for these 5 kids extends beyond the ways of description. I feel aching when I know they’re in pain. To the type of depth in which I’d do anything to remove their burdens. The single thought of any situation that I couldn’t protect them seems devastating.  These feelings are acocompanied with the highest of love from within… Almost beyond my little human ability (if that makes any sense). When they sing for me, it’s everything I have not to allow the tears to roll down my face. At the very sight of they’re smiles, my world seems magically brighter. It’s powerful.

I can express first hand what it’s like to have protective parents (love you guys!). Feeling the intense love can be comforting yet suffocating at times. All in all I’d rather have their concern for me than the other extreme. That topic could be an entire new post but I’d like to stick with the new found love I’ve felt. I appreciate my parents more everyday and now make a conscious effort to try and understand why they do what they do. If I feel this way about my siblings, I can only fathom what one must feel towards their own child.

So to all the parents out there who have children at a stage in which desire independence or don’t need you as much as before, please remember that for most, the love will just grow as they do. The way it’s expressed will always be changing and in my experience, the comprehension of what you’ve done for them and the unconditional nurturing that comes from within will be acknowledged and honored more in time to come.

On the subject of family…

There’s my dear little grown-up cousin Annie. This young lady has a natural (and you slight Youtube enhanced) skill of makeup artistry. Considering my extent of makeup maxes out at actually putting on mascara, it was exciting to sit down and let her play! Step one: I sit, she giggles and the process begins!

I felt way out of the fashion loop when she busted out tape… Like from a dispenser. Enough said.

Annie, you are a talented girl with a contagious smile and a magnetic personality. Keep that powerful attitude of yours focused on the right path… your path. Love you cuz!

I’m finally in Instagram! (Thank you Ryan for the helpful push). Find me under herhappytrails.

A taste of memories

First off, I’d like to deliver my love to everyone during this holiday season. If you’re on a tropical island somewhere or shoveling snow, I wrap my thoughts around you and send a huge, happy hug!

Now if you’ve followed this blog for any length of time, you’ve probably noticed the quantity of posts slowly decreasing to few and far between. Naturally, going from a volunteer based backpacking lifestyle to an extended visit to the states, my daily routine has relaxed into an enjoyable job and reuniting with old friends.

Confession time: I miss blogging!

So here’s the deal, since I’m choosing to stay in the states for a bit longer (I still can’t convince the airlines to let me volunteer for free flights) I figure I’d post about the random events, products and people that are surrounding my daily environment.

To kick off this new chapter of herhappytrails, I’m going to show you an international market that we have right here in our own backyard!

Located at: 10971 Olson Dr – Rancho Cordova, CA 95670

I’d like to think it was developed for quirky people like me that truly enjoy getting lost abroad discovering new items in local markets. (See collage below)

However, after walking through this 80,000 square foot building, I realized it’s home away from home for many international residents. It’s a perfect place to gather traditional ingredients for tasty recipes that you generally can’t find at regular shopping stores.

Let’s take a walk!

I’m grateful to have traveled enough in which several of these items were familiar to me. So familiar that I actually got choked up with flash backs of the journeys in which many of these treats were a part of.

Would you like your seafood packaged, fresh, or extremely fresh?

After you check out, you’re conveniently located in the new food court. I say “food court” lightly as this doesn’t have Kentucky Fried Chicken or a Pizza Hut, but an assortment of baked international goodies and a few restaurants offering unique menus.

I have yet to mention that my partner in crime for the day is my dear friend Varee. If you’ve been following since September of 2012, you’ll recognize her smile from our adventure in Switzerland together!

Our choice of lunch? I went with a popular Korean dish called Bibimbap (which was delicious!) and she chose a warm Vietnamese Pho noodle soup. For dessert we bit into a red bean stuffed mochi ball. Oh sweet memories of Japan!

I leave this post with an adorable holiday house made from Pocky packages.
