Last stop of the road trip, Prague!

As we depart the striking city of Budapest towards Prague, we’ve got our hwy sticker passes, lap picnic snacks, tunes blaring… and NO GAS!

How did we let it get this low? In every other country so far, there was a station consistently placed for your connivence. I didn’t start to worry until I noticed the “SOS” phones that were on the side of the road every mile. A gas station! We creep into the parking lot using momentum from us rocking forward and backward while laughing in a “stress relief” fashion. We made it. Why not sneak in a handstand here! Did I mention this all happens in Slovakia?

20121009-111325.jpg

We arrive late enough that I choose to sip hot tea in my pajamas as I say “Good luck!” to the boys as they head out for a pub crawl. Snoring sounds are common with a 8 person dorm room, but to be woken up by a block of wood to the rib cage from the bunk above you was new for me. Ok, ok.. I’m up!

20121009-111911.jpg

The next morning was bitter-sweet as this would be the last morning here in Europe with my dear friend Marshall. (Enter sad sounds here). We were however, excited to reunite with Michael, the traveler we met in Vienna! Also joining us was a new friend from Brazil, good times!

My time is up here in Prague. I’m on my way to Frankfurt Germany to hit some major reunions as Marshall will be making his way back to the states tomorrow. He drops me off at the train station with no time for soppy goodbyes… Just enough for a monster hug, a high five and two smiles that confirm a Eurotrip well done!

20121009-120412.jpg

Marshall, I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, in my book…. you are quality energy. Your easy going vibe combined with nonstop positive enthusiasm equals a masterpiece for a perfect travel partner. Thank you for the memories, high fives, and the uncountable amount of times you saved me (and startled me) with the unforgettable “Bike lane!!”

Surprise trip to Recklinghausen!

I took a small detour from Holland to visit my dear friends Carina and Florian in the small German town of Recklinghausen. I met them back at my very first Oktoberfest and have kept in touch ever since. Here we are last year in Munich at Oktoberfest.

20120921-172940.jpg

20120921-173447.jpg

20120921-173515.jpg

Instead of meeting up at Oktoberfest again, they invited me to their home town for more of a personal visit. (Turns out it’s kind of tricky to really connect during the dancing on picnic tables, singing German songs while balancing your stein of beer in one hand and a giagantic pretzel in the other.

Rather than jumping directly into the photos of my 48 hours of Recklinghausen, let’s all sit for a short story of “Proper English by the Dutch.”

To get to my sweet friends I had to take a train from Amsterdam to Munster, then another from Munster to Recklinghausen. I’ve gotten pretty comfortable In my abilities with public transportation because well, it’s all I use now. I have my 8:50am ticket to Munster in my hand as I shuffle through my bag when the train pulls up. I double check the watch in my purse… 8:50. European trains, on time as always!
I skip on board (maybe I just walked, but I felt like skipping) and sat down for the 3 hour journey. The train pulls away jusy as my eyes catch the well lit number clock above the schedule sign… 8:48, Oh no. This may be the first time a watch set 2 minutes fast will cost me. Once I put my stomach back to it’s orginal position, I gathered my thoughts and decide to go back to Amsterdam to catch the next train in then correct direction.
You can imagine at this point that I’m a little more assertive when making the decision to board but with confidence this time, I’m on my way!
A solid hour into the ride, we make a 4 min stop which gives me time to confirm my future transitions.Wonderful, a kind looking gentleman in uniform stands by at the station, he”ll validate my direction form sure! I walk over not rushed, but certainly with a pace to give the idea of “Let’s not sit and chat over tea.”

The conversation goes as follows:
Me: “Excuse me sir, am I on the correct train”? (as I show him my ticket).
Him: “No mam…”
This is when my stomach returns to it’s dropped lower sick position.
Him: As he cocks his head slightly to the side, “You’re in the right train.”

With little time to figure out if this frustrated me or tickled me, I continue:
Me: “Ok great, will they call out my stop?”
Him: “I’m sorry no…they will not call it out.” With no eye contact at all, he finishes his thought.
Him: “They will announce it upon arrival.”
Me: “Thank you for your help.”
My inner thoughts: “Aahhhhhhhh!!”

I actually don’t remember if I did or said anything here besides a smile and thank you. Either way, looking back it makes me giggle.

Ok, on to my amazing time with Carina, Florian and new friends Sebastian and Julia.

Upon arrival I was warned that the only neat thing in Reckinghausen is the flat of Carina and Sebastian. I knew they were correct judging by the front door…

I was informed during dinner that their favorite futbol team was playing and we were headed to a local joint to watch it, score! If you know me at all, you know I was game to dive into the appropriate jersey and cheer when necessary. I also mastered how to say the team name and where they were from (just in case I was questioned… Which I was). Wooohoo BVB!

20120921-180138.jpg

The following day we went for a little “sport”, as they call it. Carina showed me the highest point in Recklinghausen where the Horizont-Observatorium sits. There are over 500 steps that lead to the 360 degree panoramic view.

Side note- On the way there I pulled over to ask in all seriousness,
“Is the second set of random letters a real word… and if so, how do you say it?”.
Turns out it is! If you’d like to hear what it sounds like, I suggest you find a German friend to read it to you.

20120922-160951.jpg

The start to our mini climb.

20120922-161122.jpg

20120922-161133.jpg

Up we go to the first level where you can rest and sneak a peak of the panoramic view. I personally found the fence more intriguing. This is fairly traditional in Belgium but I’d never seen it here. Couples take a key lock, some even have it engraved, and together as a symbol of their commitment, they attach the bolt to the fence and toss the key. In Belgium it’s done over rivers and canals. I wonder where these keys went? Either way I think it’s the closest thing to marriage that I’m comfortable with so far… Maybe.

20120922-161409.jpg

20120922-161417.jpg

After this level we turned around to find this inviting set of stairs. Let’s do it!

20120922-161545.jpg

20120922-161602.jpg

At the top, we reach a view stretching as far as you can see! I’m still learning the panoramic setting on my camera, but you get the idea.

20120922-183648.jpg

20120922-183712.jpg

This enormous man made structure is the Observatorium shown on the diagram above. It also ended up being the pick for the handstand photo. Can you see me?

20120922-183810.jpg

For lunch, the crew decides to show me one of their favorite meals, currywurst with french fries and mayonnaise. “Sure!”
(Please feel free to insert whatever face you think I made followed by a clearing of the throat).

Carina’s plates is on the right and my dish is on the left. I ordered beets, saurkrauat and a homemade dill coleslaw. (Yes, I tried hers and “No thank you” was my response).

Florian’s plate before…

20120922-184116.jpg

…and after.

To wrap up my last night, Carina bundles me up and leads the way to the roof for the sunset.

That cool design in the distance is the Observatorium from our earlier climb earlier.

20120922-184410.jpg

I found these two pictures for a fun comparison. The first is a shot from last year then followed by a photo from my recent visit.

20120922-184532.jpg

20120922-184545.jpg

As always, I want to thank my amazing friends for the extremely warm welcome, fun food, and the opportunity to experience the local life in Germany. Turns out they all don’t wear dirndls and drink from steins everyday. Florian and Carina, I’m so thankful I met you years ago and even more grateful that we’ve stayed in touch. Next round is on me! Tschuss!

Sleep in Spain! (on a budget)

It was a whirlwind this month going from city to city, so I’m going to throw you the basics of each stop just to give you an idea.

FABRIZZIO’S GUEST HOUSE IN MADRID:

With Madrid being so large, it was important for me to have a good location. Fabrizzio’s couldn’t get any better being in the Plaza Mayor, pretty much as central as you can get!

My favorite factor: The view from each rooms private balcony! The first pictue was early one morning in which I got to observe this group chanting something with enthusiasm. Sure wish I could tell you what they were so excited about.
The second is a “fancy photo” of the night scene in this gorgeous square.
20120913-212008.jpg

20120913-211911.jpg

The inside of the house was nothing more and nothing less than you needed to feel comfortable, clean and safe. Here are a few shots including some friendly faces I got to connect with here at Fabrizzio’s.

This is the owner of that decided to join us out for a night!
20120913-213228.jpg

THE FUNKY HOSTEL IN GRANADA:

To start with, Granada is an adorable place with warm people, beautiful streets and fresh markets everywhere! For the short stay, this was my pick and it was a great one.

The decor is by far the best quality of this hidden little treasure. I even got a “welcome” note!

20120913-220011.jpg

20120913-220033.jpg

20120913-220112.jpg

It was time to replenish some of the Euros spent to get there, so I hung this up in the common room.

20120913-220247.jpg

20120913-220314.jpg

To say my room was “colorful” would be an understatement.

20120913-220437.jpg

20120913-220456.jpg

20120913-220514.jpg

This wall had clearly been designed by backpackers passing through, so of course I added a touch for travelers sake! I figured since the theme was creatures falling uncontrollably, I’d add a pic of me hand standing next to a tower of balanced rocks.

20120913-221006.jpg

20120913-221034.jpg

This is the portion of the post in which I get to apologize for slacking in the accommodation photo department. Valencia, Alicante and Ibiza somehow slipped through the cracks. So just for kicks, here IS a few of what I got…

VALENCIA: Remember this was the tomato festival I have yet to expose, but I will introduce (or re-introduce) you to my fellow travel partners that ventured with me for a part of Spain.

Here they are arriving to Valencia. On the right is Bevan, an Australian I met back in Buenos Aires earlier this year while touring with Ian (on the left). Ian is a long time friend that flew to Argentina and hit the Iguazu Falls with me.

20120913-222032.jpg

Rub your eyes for a minute, because here’s a picture of them back in South America when we went to a percussion concert… Yes, that’s really Bevan in the middle!

20120913-222313.jpg

ALICANTE:
Meet Sofieke! I connected with her last summer while studying spanish. She was one of my flat mates and ended up moving here! The first picture is us on the beach a year ago, followed by this trip on the same beach, almost to date!

20120913-223149.jpg

20120913-223340.jpg

If you can look past Bevan (oh… boys) this is us out on the town. Thank you so much Sofieke for the warm welcome, great girl talk and a perfect reunion. Besos!

20120913-223543.jpg

IBIZA!
Similar to Las Vegas, you don’t spend much time in the room so standards aren’t as high. Well, we got spoiled with a large room and ocean view. Again with the lack of pictures, here are a few just showing a smidge of what we saw.

20120913-223957.jpg

20120913-224141.jpg

20120913-224244.jpg

20120913-224315.jpg

Off we go to Barcelona!

20120913-224347.jpg

FABRIZZIO’S IN BARCELONA:
Yep, the same family of Fabrizzio’s in Madrid. After hanging out with Ernesto (the one running it in Madrid) he sent us a connection to the one in Barcelona. It had the same comfortable vibe as if you were just lounging at a friends house.

(Enter really neat pictures that i didn’t take of the hostel here… My apologies again).

MANA MANA HOSTEL IN TOSSA DE MAR!
This one has got to be one of my favorites so far. Not because the property was spotless, not due to the amazing kitchen, spacious rooms or the roof terrace… No, not even for it’s prime location! Why is this one my favorite? The owners, Marta and Dani. Two incredible people that go above and beyond the call of running a hostel. Not only did I feel welcomed, I felt cared for. I won’t get too mushy, but they came into my life at the right time with the perfect energy. Thank you so much for everything and Mana Mana is the only place I’ll stay if I head that way again!

You can barely see her sweet face at the front desk. (Wow, I totally blew it on this post… sorry friends)!

20120913-225546.jpg

20120913-225646.jpg

20120913-225652.jpg

20120913-225659.jpg

So there you have a general idea of what some of the options are for sleeping in Spain. Obviously it wasn’t a focus on this part of my trip, but please feel free to shoot me an email if you want more details about a specific accommodation or city.

“How do you afford all that traveling?!”

How do I afford it? I’m not a professional traveler nor do I guarantee that “my way” will work for everyone. I’ve just been asked so many times that I feel the need to share as much as I can in hopes that others will take an opportunity in their life and make it happen as well.

Lets start with the primary way I’m able to travel, the beautiful world of volunteering. My thoughts have always been that I have a healthy body, active mind and an abundance of energy… Why not put it to use! While researching my possibilities, I fell upon the program described below and have stuck with it ever since.

“Help exchange” is an online listing of hosts that generally offers a room and meals in exchange for work. You can snoop around the website without registering, but the annual fee is minimal and it allows you to see everyone’s profile in detail. If you desire to travel abroad, meet locals, and learn more about culture than the “tours” provide, I highly suggest you check this out, it’s changed my life.

Help Exchange .

To give you an idea of some of the things I’ve gotten to do and places I’ve seen while volunteering, here are a few links to some of my favorite hosts!

This was with an amazing family in Australia that provided a tree house for the accommodation, scrumptious vegetarian meals and a plethora of knowledge with organic gardening.   LIFE IN THE TREES OF WOONONA .

this took me to a tiny coastal town in New Zealand. I got to share a cabin with another volunteer from Malaysia.  ON THE RESERVE .

An orphanage in Argentina that opened my eyes to a group of smart, funny and extremely entertaining children.  ANOTHER DAY WITH THE KIDS .

This was in a small village outside of Cusco Peru. We got to work at the school and then direct the after class programs.

If I’m not volunteering, I’m usually staying with a friendly fellow traveler that I’ve met along the way.
“Well, if you ever make it to (fill in a random city here) you’re more than welcome to stay with me”.
This is a common offer that I rarely turn down… and fully plan on returning the favor when (if) I grow up and get a place of my own.

If I’m not volunteering or reconnecting with a friend, I’m usually on the way to do so. This leads to my next accommodation that, for the most part, is free considering I have to do it either way. Planes, trains, buses and boats!
If at all possible I make my transfers during the “night route”. Prices are generally the same and sometimes even cheaper. Depending on how long the ride is, they depart between 10p and midnight, getting you to your destination by the morning. So if you can sacrafice a night without totally horizontal sleep and can endure the random crying baby, Mr. Sneeze McGee or Captain Cough sitting behind you… You’ve just got one more night of rest (or attempted rest) for no extra charge!

When none of the above has fallen into place, I resort to the hostel life.
Definition of hostel: A hostel is a budget-oriented, shared-room (“dormitory”) accommodation that accepts individual travelers (typically backpackers) or groups for short-term stays, and that provides common areas and communal facilities.
It serves it’s purpose for a minimal price compared to hotels and resorts.  Even though it’s money out of the pocket, I still feel like it’s a positive addition to my journey. This is usually where I get bunked up with a stranger that leaves as a new friend that I usually reconnect with down the road.  Without the handy backpacker accommodation, I wouldn’t meet nearly as many people as I do.
Photobucket Pictures, Images and Photos

Next expense – Transportation
Of course to get to the main destination, especially from the states, a flight is neccessary. Unfortunately I haven’t met a backpacker yet with part ownership in a major airway company, so I just rely on a few basic tricks to get the best, cheapest flights possible.  Here’s what I’ve found:

What day and time you fly – Be flexible. Do you have to fly out Friday Or Sunday (the most expensive days) or can you swing a red eye on Wednesday?

What day and time you purchase – It’s been proven that shopping and purchasing flights on Tuesday afternoon is usually the cheapest option. Airlines are battling for your ticket because most people snoop for deals on the weekends when they have time to look.

Airports – sometimes flying into and out of a nearby airport can save money.  This isn’t my favorite trick because sometimes you’ll spend just as much money (and time) getting a transfer to your final destination over the direct savings.

Using the plastic – Because I use so many different airlines and travel companies, I use a general CC that allows me to save up points and use them towards ANY ticket. It’s a beautiful circle of using the card to buy the tickets (paying it off every month!) and then using those points for the next flight.

Buying in bulk or one ways- Most of the time I just have a general layout of when and where I’ll be month to month.  This prevents me from purchasing specific tickets in advance, however I found a company that allows you to buy in bulk with the flexibility to change your dates.
  AIRTREKS .

If I don’t use them for my flights, I’ll stick to a one way purchase then figure it out as I go.
Photobucket Pictures, Images and Photos

Websites – Kayak, Travelzoo, Orbits, Expedia and the list goes on of sites that can help with your journey.  I don’t soley rely on them, however they are helpful to narrow down some options and they’ll email you valid deals that the general public won’t hear about.

Once I’ve landed…

Plane, train, bus or share – Before I decide on my transportation details, I first pick which type is going to be the best fit to my needs.  Financially, what is the cheapest and is it worth it. Is it safe enough to risk and save the money? What about time flexibility, can I afford to loose a day of travel on a 22 hour bus ride or should I just pay the extra for the 2 hour flight? A fancy train for speed, luxury bus for semi comfort or a local van to save the green?

My favorite way to really save with ground transportation is sharing a ride.  I’m not necessarily talking about hitch hiking, although that was a blast in New Zealand! The photo below is the brave driver who picked me up, my new and still friend Hamish!
Photobucket Pictures, Images and Photos

The other option which is an organized ride share that you can usually find in every country.   www.blablacar.com for example is a site that links people looking for gas money if you want a ride to where they’re going.  A high speed train from Madrid to Barcelona is about 120 euro, a public bus averages 50 euro, but a ride share would ask for 30 euro. Is it worth it at that time?
Photobucket Pictures, Images and Photos

Last option that Ive always kept as a possibility is car relocation services.  There are online sites that link you with companies that need a one way driver. Maybe it ws rented by a previous traveler to go to an major airport and now needs to make it back to it’s original city. You pick it up, drive it to your next stop and then viola, you just payed for gas with a bonus of the open road! This is even more amazing if you can find another backpacker going in the same direction who wants a ride and will split the gas… Score!

I get there, stay there and now it’s time to eat!

When volunteering, part of your work is rewarded with meals.  It can vary between getting all your daily meals to just eating dinner with the family. Either way, I always have a variety of protein, carbs and fat in my backpack to hold me over and or consume as an emergency meal. Some examples are a variety of nuts, dried fruit or veggies, dry oats (granola if you need more flavor), honey, etc. Once I arrive to a new destination one of my favorite things is to find the local store or market and look around for healthy items that I’ve never seen before to throw in my bag for the next bus ride. Financially I can survive much longer by making my own meals which is another bonus of hostel traveling. The kitchen is open to the guests to use (something you won’t find at hotels).

Left overs? Save them! If I DO eat out I’ll always see if someone wants to share a meal and if not, I’ll wrap up what’s left and eat that for meals to follow until it’s gone. See the “edibles” posts for some examples of creative re-use of food.
This meal, I turned into three!

Commonly hostels or volunteer hosts will provide a spread for breakfast that might include (rarely including ALl) things like fruit, cereal, oats, breads, yogurt, eggs and so on. The yogurt will spoil over time on the road so eat that first. You need heat to cook eggs, so if yogurt isnt your choice of protien go for the egg.  The breads, oats and grain travel well, so snag a serving and throw it in your bag for a later snack.  Ive even put my morning yogurt in the freezer and taken it when I leave. This is so when I hit the road and get hungry, I snag a piece of fruit from a stand and my thawed yogurt is thawed and ready to eat…and free!

Lastly, “Do you ever make money”?

Yes! I’m fortunate that the 4 career choices I’m experienced with, I can take around the world.  Primarily hairstyling because everyone wants a haircut and most travelers don’t have the desire to trust or over pay a salon.  So when I arrive in a new hostel I’ll hang a small sign stating my prices and room number and see what comes my way.  Usually at each hostel, I’ll make enough to pay for my stay and walk away with some change.  At one accommodation, the owner of the place let me give his staff haircuts and didn’t charge me for the 3 nights I stayed!

Photobucket Pictures, Images and Photos
Photobucket Pictures, Images and Photos

Massage therapy, bar tending and teaching are the other three that I use when opportunity arise. Sometimes I get paid cash, other times its a barter like dinner, a bus ticket, a free night stay or my personal favorite, language lessons!

So there you have it, a general guide to my sneaky ways of traveling like I do. Hopefully it’s obvious I truly enjoy it, so please don’t hesitate to email me with specific questions.

I heart NYC

I’m sure I don’t have to do much explaining for this ever so popular destination in North America. The songs, the shows, the movies and “Hollywood” does a fine job of providing every angle that New York City has to offer. For me, this weekend was primarily to reunite with several friends. First and for most, meet Jessica. An extremely kind girl with brains and beauty. We met in Italy last year and toured through France and ended in Spain together. During that journey we mentioned how cool it would be to connect again. All the way from Canada (near Niagra Falls) she flys in and finds me at the JFK airport.

Here we are in Florence…

…and now in New York City!
Photobucket Pictures, Images and Photos

We stayed at the New York Budget Inn which is a hostel styled setting with some of the most friendly staff members I have met on the road this far. If you’re ever passing through and desire a great price, I highly suggest this be your choice for accommodations. Location, employees, comfort and cleanliness… all exceeded my expectations, thanks gentlemen!

Remember the coconut jelly that I LOVED in Barbados? I found this woman selling whole baby coconuts. I get to drink the water, then eat the jelly! FYI: the flavor was nothing like on the island. I should of known, bummer.

This wet evening was far from drab as we got to eat at one of my new favorite spots. RAYMI is a traditional Peruvian restaurant that has brought authentic flavors right to your dish. How did I ever find out about this amazing treasure? On the flight home from Peru, I was seated right next to Erik Rameriz, one of the creators and talented chefs. I teased him on the plane that I would show up someday… surprise!
Photobucket Pictures, Images and Photos

With a reservation and a smile we walkEd in and were treated like royalty. Poor Jessica didn’t know how excited I was going to get when seeing so many familiar items that I’ve been missing from Peru. These are including but not limited to: Pisco, Chancaca, Cusqueña, and several fresh seafood options garnished with toasted corn and sweet potatoes!

Due to the gorgeous ambiance, I didn’t snap any photos so please click on the link to tempt yourself with the best Peruvian restaurant Kniwn to me! Thank you Erik for the wonderful experience, stimulated taste buds and a glimpse of my journey to Peru.

The following evening, we hit up yet another favorite of mine, Marc Forgione. Marc was winner of the next Iron Chef on the food network and joined up with an incredible staff to open this successful restaurant. One of the talented team members and GM happens to be a childhood friend of mine from Folsom. Matthew Conway (to be said in a fancy voice, even though we just called him Matt) allowed us to snag one of his beverage creations while nibbling on some unique bites.

After dinner we got a bonus reunion with my even longer time pal, Jimmy. The three of us grew up together and parted ways due to… Well, life. This night we got to hang out like back in the old school days. Here’s Jimmy with us on the way to the next stop. This is when the camera was put away.
Photobucket Pictures, Images and Photos

Fast forward to our last stop, non other then some New York Pizza to finish up the night! Matt is nearest on the right, then Jessica and Jimmy.

Photobucket Pictures, Images and Photos

…and of course we meet a group of friendly fellas! The one with the broken arm is getting married soon (enter smooshy love sounds here). What a fun group of boys, sure wish we could of connected sooner. Well cheers to you and your new chapter of marriage!
Photobucket Pictures, Images and Photos
Photobucket Pictures, Images and Photos

Much thanks to Matt and Jimmy for not only making time for us, but enhancing our trip!

So it’s now the night before we’re leaving and I get a dental emergency. To spare you the details, we’ll just say I couldn’t have left without it being fixed. This is Dr. Peter Mann, my super hero in a white coat. He got me in within 20 minutes of a phone call and out within 30 minutes of sitting down. I’m so grateful for his calming work and the wonderful girl who greeted me with an “It’s going to be all right” smile.
Photobucket Pictures, Images and Photos

The morning we were departing, Jessica back to Niagra and me off to Madrid, we waited in the Grand Central Station for our bus. Handstand time! If you can’t find me, I’m the one with my feet in the air.

Atlanta in 5 days!

Remember Marshall?
Photobucket Pictures, Images and Photos

He was the chef I met in Las Vegas just a couple of months ago. We started chating about travels poolside at Ceasars Palace and before the end of the day, we made plans to reunite. High fives to a fellow traveler that sticks to his word!
This brings me to his residence in Atlanta Georgia for a whirlwind tour in 5 days.

Stone Mountain, at least the back side view anyway. My first excursion is to hike this beast!

The walk towards the base. There was an awesome kids activity set along the way, clearly puts McDonalds playground to shame.

SATURDAY PIG ROAST!
Marshall found out that I had never been to a roast before. This brought him to plan a shindig at his place for me and his friends.

*Please note some of these images might be difficult to observe depending on your eating beliefs.

Prepping in the kitchen!

Kim (the trooper in the pictures above and Marshall’s friend fom college)dominated the bacon and beans. I should also mention that her sauce for the slaw and cucumber salad should be documented and sold around the world… Scrumptious!

4th of July in the USA!

Independence Day is the national holiday of the United States of America commemorating the signing of the Declaration of Independence by the Continental Congress on July 4, 1776, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
(I didn’t write that… Thank you Internet).

*Fun fact #1 – The US flag changed appearance for 280 years as each state was added to the union, another star was added. The last star was added on July 4th, 1960, after Hawaii became the 50th state.
Photobucket Pictures, Images and Photos
The 13 stripes (seven red and six white) are for the original 13 colonies and the 50 stars represent all the states. Red is for Valor and Hardiness; white is for Innocence and Purity; and blue is for Vigilance, Perseverance and Justice.

North Americans celebrate in several different ways usually including, but not limited to a parade, food mostly prepared on a barbecue, adult beverages and fireworks (liquor and fireworks… kind of silly when I actually write it out).
*Fun fact #2 – more than 66 million Americans bust out the grill on this national holiday.

Here are some photos snagged from the local parade that was kicking off the famous Folsom Pro Rodeo.  For details about this event click here . It’s actually really cute!
*Fun fact #3 – 50 long horn cattle lead this parade followed by half dozen “scoopers” to clean up the cow droppings.
Photobucket Pictures, Images and Photos
Photobucket Pictures, Images and Photos
There’s a fun run in which locals dress up in costume and jog with the parade. I thought these guys were adorable.

For years I have been lucky enough to the get “the invite” from a great family that choose to spend their 4th on a house boat! This year there was a range of ages which in my opinion brings a wonderful balance to the festivities.

Merriam Webster definition: Houseboat
a boat fitted for use as a dwelling; especially : a pleasure craft with a broad beam, a usually shallow draft, and a large superstructure resembling a house.

We celebrated on Lake Oroville. This body of water sits in central California outside of the popular college town of Chico.
*Fun fact #3 – Chico State was nicknamed the “party school” in 1987 by playboy magazine.

At the doc you get to see a variety of other boats.

Quick quiz: There are four girls in this pic. One is Portuguese and German. Another is Irish, English and German. One is Irish and French and the other is Native American, Italian, French and German.

Answer: Crystal the Portuguese/German is at the top and Stephanie the Irish/English/German is to the right. Kelsey is the French/Irish on the left and I’m the bottom set of legs as the remaining mix.

Safety first! We took pride in our vibrant jackets (that were all youth sizes which makes for a well…. Snug fit).

Trek to the base of Machu Picchu

There isn’t a main train station at Machu Picchu itself, the closest stop is in the nearby town of Aguas Calientes. Here is where you can hop on a smaller train to connect you the rest of the way. From Cusco you have a few options to get there:

You can enjoy the fancy train that provides food, drinks, lounge chairs, pillows, blankets and a few hundred other tourist. All just for a “ticket price”, a huge commitment and your left arm.

You can take a tour bus that has a guide, a pitstop with lunch buffet, and only 100 other tourist. All for a “small fee”, a minor commitment and a sore toosh.

…and then there’s OUR choice…

We scored with a local collectivo (a 7 person mini van that seated 9 adults and all of their luggage) for only $14 USD per person.
Photobucket Pictures, Images and Photos

This spacious ride lasted 4 hours with a complimentary stop at a stand on the side of the road. It had several food options like blocks of cheese, raw chicken and an assortment of candy! They also let us use the bathrooms!
Photobucket Pictures, Images and Photos

After the bus ride we hopped in a cab that picked up this woman. She climbed into the back trunk area with her blanket of corn as she politely stared at the gringos (I don’t blame her).
Photobucket Pictures, Images and Photos

We then got dropped off to another taxi that only had room for 2 more so I followed the woman’s idea and got cozy in the back.

Finally we arrived to Aquas Calientes (the place where you can get on the small train to the city below Machu Picchu).

At last! The place where we will rest before the day in the sacred city of Machu Picchu. Part one of volunteering in Peru

There’s something extremely unique in the eyes of the people here, at least in the village I stayed in. There’s a sparkle when they smile I’ve never seen before. If I had to guess it would be the simplicity of life they live that allows for the beauty of “the present” itself to be truly appreciated. A lot of us say “no worries” or “no stress, it’s all good”… But I feel they just live it, no need to say it.
I truly hope you get even a glimpse of the same joy I did during this chapter. All with love…
Photobucket Pictures, Images and Photos

Day one: I arrive to the house after what was one of my most challenging trips from the airport. Details aren’t necessary, however the bright side was a young girl with an angelic demeanor that placed herself right in my path with intensions on helping. I didn’t ask, she probably just read through the “I have no idea… but I’ll pretend”  look on my face. She knew as much English as I knew Spanish so most of our communication was pointing, acting, and guessing…. But it worked. I will not forget her smile.

Upon arrival to the house I was quickly shown to my room and got started with the kids. Today we created  homemade toothpaste with all natural ingredients and taught the kids how important dental hygiene is.
Photobucket Pictures, Images and Photos
Photobucket Pictures, Images and Photos
Photobucket Pictures, Images and Photos

Following that I was asked to create a physical activity for the kids to dope, so outside we went. Gymnastics in the yard followed by some wrestling and futbol. By the end of the activities we had some pretty impressive handstands and a lot of really excited kids! Makes me smile.

Everybody needs a little help sometimes!
Photobucket Pictures, Images and Photos

A quick story on the animals of the house. They have rabbits, chickens, a dog and two cats who think they’re a part of your lap if you’re anywhere near a sitting position.  So I’m on my way to my room and out of the corner of my eye I see a small animal and automatically I assume it’s one of the smoosh bug cats looking for a lap. I say “not now kitty, maybe later”… And as I open my door I see it smile and respond with a really odd sound. I turn to actually look at what I saw and it was a monkey!! Marty ended up in my lap attempting to eat a hole through my jacket to get to my sack of homemade toothpaste. He was successful.
Photobucket Pictures, Images and Photos

After play with the kids, I got to meet the other volunteers who will be living here as well. An adorable couple from England who brought a cheerful greeting that I was immidiently comfortable with. We all join for dinner and had an early nights rest for the trek in the morning.

Day 2: We all meet at the breakfast table and start with a conversation about nutrition. With all of my volunteering programs, I adapt to the best of my ability to there regiment and see how it goes. I actually enjoy the experimental diet that each family in each country presents to me. My body doesn’t always love it, but I feel change is such a great way to fine tune what works best for you.
This is a vegetarian home with unique ideas. Nothing but fruit till noon(ish), a small snack before a big lunch and a large dinner around 8:30. There is no flavored or carbonated drinks, coffee, dairy, meat, fish or processed items. The sweetener we’ll be using comes straight from the cane that we literally chop off the block and melt here at the house. “Chinkaka” (is fun to say) and has a combined flavor of maple syrup and molasses with a touch of honey… Makes white sugar seem so pointless.
Photobucket Pictures, Images and Photos

The trek is 3 hours with all 5 of us: Enrique and his companion Ivy, the English couple Ozy and Alex and me!

After the hike I decided to make my way to the next town over. I don’t know what I loved more about this bus ride, the elderly woman that gently gripped my arm to stabilize herself for the bumpy journey, the two women in front of me with babies tied to them with blankets or the little girl in a side pony that stared at me for the entire trip. Now on the way home (kind of an important part),  I was told there were a few different buses I could hop on that would go near the house. In my best Spanish I asked a local which bus and with that Peruvian smile he pointed where I was standing and said “aquí”. I hopped on the next bus, which was a giant mini van with seats and standing room for 12… there were 42 of us. Fingers crossed this is the right one, I look up and there was Thais, my little angel! The sweet girl that had guilded me on the first bus was on this one!   I don’t think I can thoroughly explain the relief I felt to see her shy smile again.
Photobucket Pictures, Images and Photos

Tonight’s dinner started like this:
Photobucket Pictures, Images and Photos

And ended like this! A pie made of cornbread (that we actually made from real corn) with sautéed eggplant, onion, red pepper and purple olives in the middle as a filling with a gorgeous salad and steamed broccoli.

The next chapter of volunteering!

After a short 4 1/2 hour flight, I’ve landed safely in the country of Peru. I dare not complain about the rough flight (so bumpy that an elderly woman was escorted to the front of the plane as she gripped her stack of religious cards that had pictures of Saints on them…and the young man next to me that repeatedly did the hand cross prayer) because the technology alone that has aloud me to see this planet is simply amazing! With that said, I’m here.

The next week of this adventure will be spent outside of Cusco volunteering in a community that has dedicated there land to the energy of the local children while teaching about the positive development of the planet. If you have a minute, check it out… My new temporary home:

I have no idea if there is wifi or computer access, so if I’m unheard of for a bit… Just know I’m probably out in a field teaching fútbol or in a kitchen learning Peruvian cooking or perhaps just singing spanish songs around a campfire with the locals.
Photobucket Pictures, Images and Photos

A sincere thanks to all of you that have taken time to send me emails and encouraging messages. The joy I find in a familiar connection and the pleasant reminder of my roots has been an unexpected addition to this journey… All my love back at ya!
